How Do You Get Rid of Allergies Permanently?

You can’t cure most allergies permanently, but you can reduce symptoms dramatically through a combination of environmental changes, medical treatments, and in some cases, long-term immunotherapy that retrains your immune system. The right approach depends on what you’re allergic to and how severe your reactions are.

Allergies happen when your immune system overreacts to harmless substances like pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or certain foods. The goal of treatment is either to avoid the trigger, calm the immune response, or gradually teach your body to stop overreacting.

Reduce Allergens in Your Home

The simplest starting point is cutting down on the allergens you’re exposed to every day. A HEPA filter captures 99.7% of all particles 0.3 microns or smaller, which covers every common allergen: mold spores, pet dander, dust mites, and pollen. Running a portable HEPA filter in your bedroom, where you spend roughly a third of your life, can meaningfully reduce your symptom load. Pair it with keeping windows closed during high pollen days and running air conditioning instead.

Dust mites are one of the most common indoor allergen triggers, and your bedding is their favorite habitat. Washing sheets and pillowcases in hot water (at least 55°C or 130°F) kills all dust mites. Research testing different wash temperatures found that cooler cycles at 30°C and 40°C killed fewer than 10% of mites, while a 60°C wash killed every single one. If your washing machine doesn’t reach that temperature, using a steam cycle achieves the same result. Wash bedding weekly, and consider allergen-proof covers for your mattress and pillows.

For pet allergies, keeping animals out of the bedroom and off upholstered furniture helps, though pet dander is sticky and spreads easily through a home. Vacuuming with a HEPA-equipped vacuum, rather than a standard one, prevents fine allergen particles from being blown back into the air.

Over-the-Counter Medications

Antihistamines are the most widely used allergy treatment. They block histamine, the chemical your body releases during an allergic reaction that causes sneezing, itching, and a runny nose. Newer antihistamines (like cetirizine, loratadine, and fexofenadine) cause far less drowsiness than older options like diphenhydramine. They work best when taken daily during allergy season rather than waiting until symptoms hit.

Nasal corticosteroid sprays are often more effective than antihistamines for nasal congestion, the symptom that bothers most allergy sufferers. They reduce inflammation directly in the nasal passages and typically take a few days of regular use before reaching full effect. For eye symptoms like itching and watering, antihistamine eye drops target the problem locally.

Decongestant sprays provide fast relief but shouldn’t be used for more than three consecutive days. Beyond that, they can cause rebound congestion that’s worse than the original problem.

Nasal Saline Rinses

Rinsing your nasal passages with a saline solution is one of the simplest and most underused allergy strategies. It physically flushes out pollen, mold, dust, and pet dander that get trapped in your nose and trigger inflammation. It also thins mucus and rinses away the inflammatory substances causing swelling. You can use a neti pot or a squeeze bottle designed for nasal irrigation.

Doing a saline rinse after spending time outdoors during pollen season, or at the end of each day, removes allergens before they have time to provoke a full immune response. Use distilled or previously boiled water (never tap water) mixed with the saline packets that come with most rinse kits.

Allergy Shots (Immunotherapy)

If environmental controls and medications aren’t enough, immunotherapy is the closest thing to a long-term fix for environmental allergies. Allergy shots work by exposing your immune system to tiny, gradually increasing amounts of the allergen until it learns to tolerate it.

The process has two phases. The buildup phase involves injections one to two times per week, with a slowly increasing dose, and generally takes three to six months. Once you reach an effective dose, you move to the maintenance phase: one injection every two to four weeks for three to five years. That timeline sounds long, but many people notice meaningful improvement within the first year, and the benefits often persist for years after stopping treatment.

Allergy shots are most effective for pollen, dust mite, mold, and insect venom allergies. They require a commitment, but for people with moderate to severe allergies who don’t respond well to medications, they can be transformative.

Sublingual Immunotherapy (Allergy Tablets)

For people who don’t want regular injections, sublingual tablets are an alternative. You dissolve a tablet containing a small amount of allergen under your tongue daily. Tablets are currently available for grass pollen, ragweed, and dust mite allergies. They’re taken at home after the first dose is given in a medical office, making them more convenient than shots, though they treat a narrower range of allergens.

Food Allergy Desensitization

Food allergies require a different approach. Oral immunotherapy introduces the offending food in extremely small, carefully controlled doses that increase over time. The goal is to raise the threshold at which your body reacts, so an accidental exposure to a small amount no longer triggers a dangerous response.

What happens in your immune system during this process is well understood. Your body gradually produces protective antibodies that block the allergic antibodies from triggering a reaction. At the same time, the inflammatory immune cells responsible for allergic symptoms, including basophils and certain white blood cells, become less reactive. Over the course of treatment, the balance of your immune response shifts away from the overreaction pattern that defines an allergy.

Oral immunotherapy is available for peanut allergy, with one FDA-approved treatment for children aged 4 to 17. It doesn’t mean you can eat peanuts freely afterward, but it can protect against reactions from accidental small exposures. Research on milk, egg, and tree nut immunotherapy is ongoing, and some allergists offer these treatments in clinical settings.

Figuring Out What You’re Allergic To

Effective treatment starts with knowing your specific triggers. Skin prick testing is the most common method: a small amount of allergen is placed on your skin and lightly pricked in, and a raised bump within 15 to 20 minutes indicates a positive result. Blood tests that measure allergen-specific antibodies are an alternative, especially useful if you have a skin condition that makes skin testing unreliable or if you’re taking antihistamines you can’t stop.

Standard blood tests have a meaningful rate of both false positives and false negatives, with accuracy around 65%. Newer blood testing methods being developed at research centers like Stanford have shown accuracy closer to 95% in pilot studies, though these aren’t yet widely available. For now, skin testing remains the most reliable first-line option, and results are often combined with your symptom history to confirm the diagnosis.

Seasonal vs. Year-Round Strategies

If your allergies are seasonal (tree pollen in spring, grass in summer, ragweed in fall), starting a nasal corticosteroid spray one to two weeks before your problem season begins is more effective than waiting for symptoms to appear. Check local pollen counts and plan outdoor activities for early morning or after rain, when counts tend to be lower. Showering and changing clothes after extended time outside prevents you from carrying pollen into your home and bed.

For year-round allergies to dust mites, mold, or pets, the environmental controls matter more. Weekly hot-water washing of bedding, HEPA filtration, controlling indoor humidity below 50% to discourage mold and dust mites, and regular cleaning of surfaces where allergens collect will make a noticeable difference. These measures won’t eliminate your allergies, but combined with the right medication or immunotherapy, most people can get their symptoms down to a manageable level.
