How Do You Get Ticks? Common Ways and Risk Factors

You get ticks by brushing against vegetation where they’re waiting with outstretched legs, ready to grab onto anything warm-blooded that passes by. Ticks don’t jump, fly, or drop from trees. They crawl onto you from ground level or low vegetation, then climb upward on your body to find a spot to feed. Understanding exactly how this happens makes it much easier to avoid.

How Ticks Actually Get on You

Ticks use a hunting strategy called questing. They crawl up low shrubs, tall grass, or leaf litter, anchor themselves with their back legs, and stretch their front legs out into the air. Those front legs contain specialized sensory structures that detect heat and carbon dioxide from your breath and body. When you walk past and brush against the vegetation, the tick grabs on. That’s all it takes.

Research from Kansas State University confirms ticks have no physical mechanism to jump or leap. They simply can’t do it. The popular image of a tick dropping from a tree branch onto your head is a myth. Ticks start low, make contact when your legs or arms touch whatever they’re perched on, and then crawl to their preferred feeding spot.

Their ability to sense you is surprisingly sophisticated. Ticks detect the carbon dioxide you exhale using multiple sensory structures across their body, not just the specialized organ on their front legs. In lab experiments, blacklegged ticks still responded to carbon dioxide even after their primary sensory organs were physically removed. This means they’re remarkably good at knowing when a potential host is nearby.

Where You’re Most Likely to Pick One Up

Ticks are most common in wooded areas, at the edges where forest meets open ground, and in overgrown grassland near tree cover. Studies consistently find the highest tick densities in woodland and woodland edge habitat, with lower numbers in well-maintained open spaces like mowed park lawns. The reason is humidity: ticks dry out easily, so they need the moist microclimate that leaf litter, shade, and dense vegetation provide.

You don’t have to be deep in the woods to encounter them. The transition zone between your yard and a tree line is prime tick territory. Brushy areas along trails, stone walls with leaf buildup, and overgrown gardens all create the conditions ticks need. Even urban woodland patches support tick populations. If the ground stays shaded and damp, ticks can survive there.

Trails are high-risk because hikers repeatedly brush against the same vegetation where ticks are questing. Sitting on logs, leaning against trees, or walking through tall grass all increase your chances of contact.

When Ticks Are Most Active

Ticks can be active any time the temperature is above freezing. According to the New York State Department of Health, they become active on winter days when ground temperatures rise above 45°F. Female ticks go dormant when temperatures drop below about 40°F, but a mild spell in January can bring them right back out.

Peak activity depends on the species and region. In most of the eastern United States, nymphs (the tiny juvenile stage most likely to bite people unnoticed) are most active from late spring through midsummer. Adult ticks peak in fall and early spring. On the Pacific coast, adult blacklegged ticks become abundant by early December and stay active through winter into early summer, when dropping humidity slows them down. The practical takeaway: there’s no month when you can completely let your guard down in tick-prone areas.

Where Ticks Attach on Your Body

Once a tick grabs onto your clothing or skin, it crawls upward looking for a warm, moist spot to feed. A survey of over 700 deer tick bites at Upstate Medical University found the most common attachment site was the thigh, accounting for nearly 16% of bites. The waist and stomach tied for second at about 7.6% each, followed closely by the groin at 6.6%.

The full list of common sites, in order: thigh, waist, stomach, groin, upper back, scalp, calf, upper arm, behind the knee, armpit, neck, and lower back. Ticks were also found on the chest, shoulders, ears, inside the belly button, and on the feet and hands. The pattern makes sense: ticks are drawn to warm, hidden folds of skin where they’re less likely to be noticed or disturbed.

Animals That Carry Ticks to You

Ticks feed on mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Most species prefer different hosts at different life stages. Larvae (the smallest stage, barely visible) typically feed on small mammals like mice and chipmunks. Nymphs feed on a wider range of small to medium animals. Adults target larger mammals, particularly deer, which is why deer populations directly influence tick abundance in an area.

White-footed mice are especially important in the cycle of Lyme disease because they’re the primary reservoir where the bacteria lives. Ticks pick up the bacteria as larvae feeding on infected mice, then pass it to humans as nymphs or adults. Birds can carry ticks into new areas, sometimes over long distances. Your pets, particularly dogs that roam through brush, frequently bring ticks into your home and yard. Some species, like the brown dog tick, can complete their entire life cycle on a single dog and establish populations indoors.

How Quickly Ticks Transmit Disease

Not all tick bites make you sick, and the risk depends heavily on how long the tick stays attached. For Lyme disease, the most well-studied tick-borne illness, there’s no solid experimental evidence that transmission occurs in the first 24 hours of attachment. The probability climbs to roughly 10% by 48 hours and reaches about 70% by 72 hours. This is why finding and removing ticks quickly matters so much.

Other pathogens move faster. The bacteria that cause anaplasmosis and a relapsing fever-like illness can transmit within the first 24 hours. Powassan virus, though rare, can be transmitted within 15 minutes of attachment. These shorter windows make prevention and daily tick checks critical, not just eventual removal.

Reducing Your Risk

Staying on the center of trails and avoiding contact with trailside vegetation eliminates the primary way ticks reach you. Wearing long pants tucked into socks looks unfashionable but creates a physical barrier that forces ticks to crawl on the outside of your clothing, where they’re easier to spot.

Repellents with DEET are effective, with protection time increasing at higher concentrations up to about 50%, beyond which there’s little additional benefit. Products with less than 10% active ingredient typically protect for only one to two hours. Treating clothing with permethrin (a repellent that kills ticks on contact) adds a second layer of defense that lasts through multiple washes.

The single most effective habit is a thorough tick check after spending time outdoors. Strip down and check the high-probability zones: thighs, waistband area, groin, armpits, scalp, and behind the ears. Showering within two hours of coming indoors helps wash off unattached ticks and gives you a chance to feel for any that have started to embed. Tossing clothes in a hot dryer for 10 minutes kills any ticks hiding in the fabric, even if the clothes are dry.

In your yard, keeping grass short, clearing leaf litter, and creating a three-foot gravel or wood chip barrier between lawn and wooded areas reduces the humid habitat ticks depend on. Moving swing sets and outdoor furniture away from the tree line puts distance between where you relax and where ticks are questing.
