How Do You Get Warts on Your Hands or Fingers?

Warts on your hands are caused by certain strains of human papillomavirus, or HPV, entering your skin through tiny breaks you may not even notice. The virus infects skin cells in the deepest layer of your epidermis and triggers them to grow rapidly, forming the rough, raised bumps you recognize as warts. HPV types 2 and 4 are the most common culprits, though types 1, 3, 27, 29, and 57 can also be responsible.

How the Virus Gets Into Your Skin

Your skin is actually a highly effective barrier against HPV. The virus can only cause an infection when that barrier is broken. It needs a wound or micro-damage to reach the basal layer, the deepest part of the outer skin, where cells are actively dividing. This is why warts tend to show up on hands: your hands are constantly exposed to small cuts, hangnails, scrapes, and dry cracked skin that create entry points for the virus.

HPV specifically targets dividing skin cells, which is why healing wounds are particularly vulnerable. A fresh paper cut, a torn cuticle, or skin cracked from dry winter air all give the virus a way in. Once inside, it hijacks those dividing cells and reprograms them to produce more virus as they grow outward toward the skin’s surface. The result, weeks or months later, is a wart.

Where You Pick Up the Virus

HPV is extremely common and remarkably durable. It can survive on surfaces like towels, gym equipment, doorknobs, and shared tools even after drying out, though exactly how long it lasts on objects isn’t precisely known. You can pick it up through direct skin-to-skin contact with someone who has a wart, or indirectly by touching a contaminated surface.

Some of the most common exposure scenarios include:

  • Shared personal items: Towels, washcloths, nail clippers, and razors can all carry the virus from one person to another.
  • Gym and pool environments: Damp surfaces where many people touch the same equipment create ideal conditions for transmission.
  • Handshakes and casual contact: If you have a small cut on your hand and touch someone’s wart, or even skin that’s shedding the virus without a visible wart, infection is possible.

Nail Biting and Self-Spreading

One of the most common ways warts multiply across your hands is through self-inoculation. If you already have a wart on one finger, you can spread the virus to other fingers, your cuticles, or even your face simply by touching or picking at the wart.

Nail biting is a major risk factor. The habit creates constant micro-damage around the nails and cuticles while simultaneously bringing virus-carrying skin into contact with the mouth and other fingers. Compulsive nail picking and finger sucking carry similar risks. Even routine manicuring can spread the virus between digits if tools aren’t properly cleaned, since the process involves pushing and cutting cuticle skin that may harbor the virus.

Why Some People Get Warts and Others Don’t

Nearly everyone encounters HPV at some point, yet not everyone develops warts. The difference comes down to your immune system, specifically a type of white blood cell called T cells. Your T cells are responsible for recognizing HPV-infected skin cells and clearing them before a wart can form. Research has shown that people with a deficiency in a specific T cell signaling pathway are highly susceptible to the exact HPV strains (types 2 and 4) that cause common hand warts, while remaining otherwise healthy.

This explains several patterns you may have noticed. Children get warts more often than adults because their immune systems haven’t yet built up experience fighting HPV. People who are immunosuppressed, whether from medication or illness, tend to develop more warts and have a harder time clearing them. And some people seem to “grow out of” warts as their immune system matures and learns to fight the virus more effectively.

How Long Before a Wart Appears

Warts don’t show up immediately after exposure. The incubation period ranges from about 1 to 20 months, with most warts appearing 2 to 3 months after the initial infection. This long delay makes it nearly impossible to pinpoint exactly when or where you picked up the virus. By the time you notice a rough bump on your finger, the exposure could have happened months earlier from a surface or contact you’ve completely forgotten about.

What Hand Warts Look and Feel Like

Common warts on the fingers, knuckles, or backs of the hands typically appear as small, firm bumps with a rough, grainy surface. They’re usually grayish-yellow or brown and may have tiny black dots inside, which are small clotted blood vessels. They can appear alone or in clusters.

Palmar warts grow on the palm side of the hand and tend to be flatter because the pressure from gripping pushes them inward rather than letting them grow outward. They can be painful when you squeeze objects or press on them. Both types are caused by the same family of viruses but behave slightly differently because of the thickness and structure of skin in those areas.

Reducing Your Risk

Since HPV is everywhere and nearly impossible to avoid completely, prevention focuses on keeping your skin intact and minimizing the virus’s chances of getting through. Washing your hands frequently helps remove virus particles from the skin’s surface before they find a way in. If someone in your household has warts, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends that everyone use their own towels, washcloths, razors, nail clippers, and socks rather than sharing.

Avoid touching other people’s warts directly, and if you’re treating your own wart, wash your hands thoroughly afterward. If you bite your nails, that habit alone significantly increases your risk of both catching and spreading warts on your hands. Keeping cuticles intact, moisturizing dry or cracked skin, and covering cuts with bandages all help maintain the skin barrier that keeps HPV out.

If you already have a wart, resist the urge to pick at it or scratch it. Every time you break the surface of a wart and then touch another part of your skin, you risk planting the virus in a new location.
