How Do You Get Water Out of Your Ear? Methods That Work

Tilting your head to the affected side is the fastest way to get water out of your ear. In most cases, trapped water drains on its own within minutes to a few hours, but if it stays longer than that, a few simple techniques can help move things along and prevent infection.

Tilt, Tug, and Let Gravity Work

The most reliable first step is tilting your head so the waterlogged ear faces the ground. While holding that position, gently tug your earlobe downward and outward. This straightens the ear canal slightly, giving the water a clearer path to drip out. You can do this standing, but lying on your side with a towel under your ear works just as well if you want to stay put for a few minutes.

If tilting alone doesn’t do it, try hopping gently on one foot with your head still tilted. The combination of gravity and light vibration can break the surface tension holding the water in place.

Use Jaw Movement to Your Advantage

Chewing gum, yawning, or making exaggerated chewing motions can help release trapped water. Your jaw muscles are physically connected to the Eustachian tube, the small passage that links your middle ear to the back of your throat. This tube is normally closed, but when you chew, swallow, or yawn, two muscles pull it open briefly. That opening equalizes pressure behind the eardrum and can shift the water enough to break its seal against the canal wall.

Try combining jaw movement with a head tilt for the best effect. Chew gum while lying on your side, affected ear down, and give it a few minutes.

The Valsalva Technique

Close your mouth, pinch your nostrils shut, and blow gently through your nose. You should feel a slight pop or pressure shift in your ears. This is the Valsalva maneuver, and it works by pushing a small amount of air through the Eustachian tubes to equalize pressure and nudge trapped water loose. The key word is gently. Blowing too hard can damage your eardrum.

Create a Vacuum With Your Palm

Tilt your head to the side with the affected ear facing down. Cup your palm flat over your ear to create a seal, then press in and pull away rapidly several times. This creates a brief suction effect, similar to a plunger, that can draw water toward the opening of the canal. You’ll often feel the water shift and drain after a few pumps.

Drying Drops: Store-Bought or Homemade

If water stays trapped after physical methods, drying drops can help evaporate the remaining moisture. Over-the-counter ear drying drops typically contain about 95% isopropyl alcohol with 5% glycerin. The alcohol speeds evaporation, while the glycerin prevents the canal skin from drying out and cracking.

You can also make your own version at home by mixing equal parts white vinegar and rubbing alcohol. Tilt your head, place a few drops into the affected ear, wait 30 seconds, then tilt the other way to let it drain. The vinegar creates an acidic environment that discourages bacterial growth, which is a bonus if you’re prone to ear infections after swimming. Keep the mixture at room temperature before use. Cold liquid in the ear canal can cause dizziness.

One important limitation: do not use any drops if you suspect you have a perforated eardrum. Signs include sudden sharp ear pain, bleeding from the ear, a noticeable drop in hearing, or ringing. Putting liquid into an ear with a perforation can cause infection in the middle ear and potentially damage hearing further.

A Warm Compress Can Help

Soak a washcloth in warm water, wring it out, and hold it against the affected ear for about 30 seconds. Remove it, wait a minute, then repeat three or four times. The warmth helps open the Eustachian tube and can also thin out any water that’s gotten deeper into the canal, making it easier to drain when you tilt your head afterward.

What Not to Put in Your Ear

Cotton swabs are the most common mistake. They feel logical, but they push water and wax deeper into the canal rather than pulling it out. Medical reports of cotton swab injuries date back to the 1970s and include eardrum perforation, ear canal abrasions, wax impaction, and external ear infections. In one survey, roughly half of cotton swab users had no idea the practice could perforate an eardrum.

Ear candles are the other popular but dangerous option. Clinical testing has shown they produce zero negative pressure, meaning they don’t suction anything out. In controlled trials, candles failed to remove any material from the ear canal and actually deposited candle wax inside it. A survey of ear, nose, and throat specialists identified 21 injuries caused by ear candles, including burns and canal blockages. They have no benefit for water or wax removal.

Fingers, bobby pins, pen caps, and other improvised tools carry similar risks of scratching the canal lining and introducing bacteria.

When Trapped Water Becomes an Infection

Water that sits in the ear canal for too long creates a warm, moist environment where bacteria thrive. The result is swimmer’s ear (otitis externa), which affects the outer ear canal and is distinct from the middle ear infections common in children.

Early signs are mild: itching inside the ear, slight redness in the canal, and discomfort that gets worse when you pull on your outer ear or press the small flap of cartilage in front of the ear opening (the tragus). If it progresses, you’ll notice increasing pain, a feeling of fullness, muffled hearing, and fluid or debris partially blocking the canal.

Advanced swimmer’s ear brings severe pain that can radiate to the face, neck, or side of the head, along with complete canal blockage, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, and sometimes fever. At the mild stage, the infection is easy to treat. At the advanced stage, it’s considerably more uncomfortable and takes longer to resolve. If pulling on your outer ear hurts or you notice any fluid drainage, that’s your signal to get it looked at rather than continuing home remedies.

Preventing Water From Getting Trapped

If this keeps happening, prevention is simpler than repeated removal. Silicone swimmer’s earplugs molded to your ear shape are the most effective barrier. You can also use a swim cap that covers the ears. After every swim or shower, tilt each ear toward the ground for a few seconds and tug your earlobes to drain residual water before it has a chance to settle in.

People with narrow ear canals, heavy earwax buildup, or a history of ear surgery are more prone to trapped water because the canal’s natural drainage path is partially obstructed. Using a few drops of the alcohol-vinegar mixture after swimming can help keep the canal dry and slightly acidic, which makes it harder for bacteria to establish an infection. If water trapping is a recurring problem despite these measures, an audiologist or ENT specialist can check for structural causes like excess wax or canal narrowing.
