Shin splints heal with a combination of rest, targeted exercises, and gradual return to activity, typically over three to four weeks for mild cases. The pain comes from repetitive stress on the shinbone and surrounding tissues that outpaces your body’s ability to repair itself. The good news is that most people recover fully without medical intervention, as long as they address the problem early and resist the urge to push through it.
What’s Actually Happening in Your Leg
Shin splints, known clinically as medial tibial stress syndrome, develop when repeated impact creates microdamage in the shinbone faster than your body can fix it. The muscles along the back of your lower leg, particularly the soleus and a deeper muscle called the tibialis posterior, pull on the thin tissue covering the bone with every step. When you ramp up training too quickly or run on hard surfaces for too long, those repetitive tugging forces inflame the bone’s outer layer.
The pain typically shows up along the inner edge of the shinbone, often in the middle or lower third. It’s usually a dull ache that’s worse at the start of exercise, sometimes eases up as you warm into it, and then flares again the next morning. In more severe cases, the pain sticks around even at rest, and you may notice mild swelling or thickening along the shin. Both legs are commonly affected at the same time.
First Steps: Managing the Acute Pain
The most important thing you can do in the first one to two weeks is reduce the load on your legs. That doesn’t necessarily mean lying on the couch, but it does mean stopping the activity that caused the pain. If running triggered it, switch to something low-impact like swimming, cycling, or pool running to maintain fitness without hammering your shins.
Ice helps with pain control. Apply an ice pack with a cloth barrier for 10 to 20 minutes at a time, every hour or two, during the first few days. For pain relief, acetaminophen is generally preferred over ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory drugs. There’s growing guidance from providers to avoid suppressing inflammation after the initial acute phase, since inflammation is part of the healing process.
Exercises That Speed Recovery
Once the sharp pain settles down, strengthening and stretching the muscles around your shin is key to both healing and preventing a recurrence. The front of the lower leg (the tibialis anterior) and the calf muscles all need attention.
Stretches
- Kneeling shin stretch: Sit on the floor with your shins flat and hips resting on your calves. Lean back slightly until you feel a stretch across the front of your ankles. Hold for 30 seconds, repeat three times.
- Standing toe-curl stretch: Stand with one foot planted and slide the other about 12 inches behind you with your toes curled under. Lower your body gently until you feel a stretch from your toes up through your shin. Hold 30 seconds, three times per leg.
Strengthening
- Seated toe raises: Sit in a chair with a light ankle weight around your foot. Keep your heel on the floor and flex your foot upward as far as you can. Hold briefly, lower, and repeat for 10 to 15 reps. Do three sets per foot.
- Calf raises: Stand on a step with your heels hanging off the edge. Rise up onto your toes, pause, then lower slowly below the step level. Start with bodyweight and work up to three sets of 15.
Aim to do these exercises daily during recovery and at least three times a week once you’re back to full activity. Weak calves and shin muscles are one of the most common reasons shin splints come back.
How Long Recovery Takes
Most shin splints resolve in three to four weeks with consistent rest and rehab. Mild cases where you caught the pain early may bounce back faster. If you’ve been training through the pain for weeks before addressing it, expect a longer timeline, potentially six weeks or more. Returning to activity too soon is the single biggest reason shin splints drag on or recur.
When you do start running or jumping again, follow a gradual progression. A common approach is increasing your weekly mileage or training volume by no more than 10 percent per week. If pain returns during a session, stop and give yourself a few more days before trying again.
Footwear and Gear Adjustments
Worn-out shoes are a surprisingly common contributor. Most daily running shoes last between 300 and 500 miles before the cushioning breaks down. Lightweight racing shoes wear out even faster, around 250 to 300 miles. If you can’t remember when you bought your current pair, it’s probably time for new ones. A running specialty store can assess your gait and recommend shoes with appropriate support.
Compression sleeves are worth considering as a supplement to your recovery plan. A study in the Journal of Sport Rehabilitation tested compression wraps against rest alone in people with shin splints. Both groups improved over eight weeks, but the compression group had a significantly higher rate of returning to pain-free running at the end of the study. Compression won’t replace rest or rehab, but wearing a sleeve during the day in early recovery and during activity afterward may help you get back to training sooner.
When Shin Splints Might Be Something Else
Shin splints and tibial stress fractures share a lot of symptoms, but they behave differently in ways you can track. Shin splint pain tends to spread across a broad area of the lower leg and often improves as you warm up during exercise. Stress fracture pain is pinpointed to one specific spot on the bone. That spot will be tender when you press on it, and the pain won’t get better as you keep moving. It stays consistent or gets worse.
If your pain doesn’t improve after a few weeks of rest and gradual return to activity, if the pain is localized to one specific point, or if you’re experiencing pain at rest, those are signs that something beyond standard shin splints may be going on. Stress fractures take significantly longer to heal, so catching one early matters.
Preventing a Recurrence
Shin splints have a high recurrence rate because people tend to go right back to the same training patterns that caused them. A few changes make a real difference. Vary your running surfaces when possible, since softer ground like trails or tracks reduces impact compared to concrete. Cross-train at least one or two days a week with low-impact activities to give your shins regular recovery windows. Keep up with the calf and shin strengthening exercises even when you feel fine.
Pay attention to your training load. Most cases of shin splints trace back to a sudden spike in volume or intensity: doubling your mileage for marathon training, starting a new sport, or switching from a treadmill to outdoor running. Your bones and connective tissue adapt more slowly than your cardiovascular fitness, so the fact that you can run farther doesn’t mean your legs are ready for it yet. Gradual progression is the single most effective prevention strategy.
