You can usually tell you have mold by three things: visible discoloration on surfaces, a persistent musty smell, or unexplained health symptoms that improve when you leave the building. Sometimes all three show up together, but mold can also hide behind walls and under flooring where you’ll never see it directly. Knowing what to look for, smell for, and feel in your own body gives you the best chance of catching a problem early.
What Mold Looks Like
Mold isn’t always the dramatic black patches you see in news stories. It comes in a range of colors and textures depending on the species. The most common indoor molds include Aspergillus, which appears yellow, green, or black with a powdery or fluffy texture; Penicillium, which is blue or green with a velvety surface; and Stachybotrys (the one people call “black mold”), which is black and slimy. Early growth can look like a small cluster of dark spots that you might mistake for dirt or staining.
Pay attention to any discoloration that seems to spread over days or weeks, especially in damp areas like bathrooms, basements, laundry rooms, and around windows. Mold on grout, caulk, or ceiling tiles is common and easy to spot. But surface stains that keep coming back after cleaning are a strong signal that mold is actively growing, not just sitting on the surface.
The Musty Smell
Active mold releases chemical compounds into the air as it feeds on organic materials. The EPA refers to these as microbial volatile organic compounds, and they’re responsible for the distinctive musty, earthy odor people associate with mold. If a room, closet, or vent smells damp and stale even when everything looks dry, mold is likely growing somewhere you can’t see. This smell is one of the most reliable early warning signs, especially for hidden mold behind walls or inside ductwork.
Physical Symptoms of Mold Exposure
Your body can be a surprisingly good mold detector. The CDC reports that people who spend time in damp buildings commonly experience respiratory symptoms, worsening asthma, hay fever, and skin conditions like eczema. If you’re allergic to mold, even brief exposure can trigger sneezing, a stuffy or runny nose, red or watery eyes, and skin rashes. Mold can also irritate the eyes, nose, throat, skin, and lungs in people who aren’t allergic at all.
For people with asthma, mold exposure often shows up as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. In more severe cases, prolonged exposure can cause a condition called hypersensitivity pneumonitis, with symptoms including muscle aches, chills, fever, night sweats, extreme fatigue, and weight loss. These symptoms can mimic a lingering cold or flu, which is part of what makes mold exposure tricky to identify.
The key pattern to watch for: symptoms that get better when you’re away from home (or away from a specific building) and return when you come back. That location-dependent pattern is one of the strongest clues that your environment, not a virus, is the problem.
Where Mold Hides
The mold you can see is only part of the picture. According to the EPA, mold commonly hides on the back side of drywall, wallpaper, and paneling. It grows on the top side of ceiling tiles, the underside of carpets and pads, inside walls around leaking or condensing pipes, on wall surfaces behind furniture where condensation forms, inside HVAC ductwork, and in roof materials above ceiling tiles. These locations share two things: moisture and organic material for mold to feed on.
Mold can begin colonizing a damp surface within 24 to 48 hours after water exposure. That means even a brief leak, a one-time flood, or condensation buildup can start a mold problem before you realize anything happened. If you’ve had any water damage, even if the area looks dry now, it’s worth investigating further.
DIY Mold Test Kits Don’t Work Well
If you’ve considered picking up a mold test kit from a hardware store, the results are unlikely to tell you anything useful. These petri-dish-style kits will almost always grow mold, because mold spores are naturally present in every indoor and outdoor environment. A positive result only confirms what’s already true everywhere: mold exists in the air. The Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center states plainly that home mold test kits “do not provide meaningful answers,” and Consumer Reports has rated them “Not Recommended” due to significant flaws. Even when a kit returns detailed results, those results can be misleading without a proper sampling plan and visual inspection to put them in context.
Professional Inspection and Medical Testing
If you suspect hidden mold but can’t find it visually, a professional mold inspector uses tools you don’t have at home: infrared cameras that detect temperature differences behind walls (a sign of moisture), moisture meters that measure dampness inside structural materials, and air sampling equipment that can identify specific mold species and spore concentrations. This kind of inspection gives you actionable information about where the problem is and how severe it is.
On the medical side, if you’re experiencing symptoms and want to confirm a mold allergy, doctors can run two types of tests. A skin prick test introduces a tiny amount of mold allergen to your skin; if a raised bump (a hive) develops at the site, you’re allergic. A blood test measures the level of specific antibodies your immune system produces in response to mold. Either test can confirm whether your body is reacting to mold exposure or whether your symptoms have a different cause.
What You Can Handle Yourself
The EPA draws a clear line: if the moldy area is less than about 10 square feet (roughly a 3-by-3-foot patch), you can typically clean it up yourself with soap and water or a commercial mold remover. Anything larger than that, or any situation involving significant water damage, calls for professional remediation. The same applies if mold is inside your HVAC system or behind walls, since disturbing large mold colonies without proper containment can spread spores throughout your home.
Preventing mold from returning comes down to controlling moisture. Fix leaks promptly, improve ventilation in bathrooms and kitchens, and use a dehumidifier in damp spaces like basements. Mold can’t grow without water, so eliminating the moisture source is more important than any cleaning product.
