Cervical Mucus Changes Before and During Ovulation

One of the earliest and most accessible signs is a change in your cervical mucus. In the days leading up to ovulation, discharge becomes progressively wetter, clearer, and more slippery. At peak fertility (typically days 10 to 14 of your cycle), it stretches between your fingers and looks like raw egg whites. This texture exists for a functional reason: thin, wet mucus makes it easier for sperm to travel through the uterus.

After ovulation, mucus typically becomes thicker, cloudier, or dries up altogether. If you notice a clear transition from that stretchy, egg-white quality to something stickier or dryer, that’s a strong hint that ovulation has passed. Checking your mucus daily gives you a pattern to compare against over multiple cycles.

Basal Body Temperature Confirms It After the Fact

Your basal body temperature (BBT) is your body’s lowest resting temperature, taken first thing in the morning before you get out of bed. After ovulation, rising progesterone causes a small but measurable temperature increase, typically between 0.4°F and 1°F. The key detail: BBT doesn’t predict ovulation. It confirms it already happened. You’re looking for a sustained rise over at least three consecutive days compared to the previous six. The pattern across days is what matters, which is why BBT tracking works best when you’ve charted for two or three cycles and can see your personal baseline clearly.

Ovulation Predictor Kits Detect the Hormone Surge

Over-the-counter ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) measure luteinizing hormone (LH) in your urine. Your body produces a spike of LH right before the egg is released. Once this surge shows up in blood, ovulation follows about 36 to 40 hours later. Signs You May Not Have Ovulated

Having a period doesn’t guarantee you ovulated. It’s possible to bleed without releasing an egg, a pattern called anovulatory bleeding. The biggest red flag is irregular cycles: if the time between your periods varies significantly from month to month, some of those cycles may be anovulatory.

Other signs that ovulation may not have occurred include a flat BBT chart with no sustained temperature rise, absence of the egg-white mucus shift, and consistently negative OPK results despite testing during the expected window. Occasional anovulatory cycles are normal, especially during times of high stress, significant weight change, or in the years approaching menopause. The most reliable approach is layering two or three methods together: watch for the mucus shift, confirm with an OPK, then verify with a temperature rise over the following days.

One method worth knowing about but not relying on is saliva ferning. Small microscopes sold for home use let you look for fern-shaped crystallization patterns in dried saliva, caused by rising estrogen before ovulation. The FDA notes that not all women produce visible ferning, and results can be disrupted by eating, drinking, smoking, or brushing your teeth beforehand. Some men even produce ferning patterns. It’s an interesting biological phenomenon, but it’s not reliable enough to use as your primary indicator.

For practical purposes, if you’re seeing consistent egg-white mucus around mid-cycle, getting positive OPK results, and observing a clear temperature shift afterward, you can be quite confident ovulation is happening.
