How Do You Know If Your Blood Sugar Is Too High?

High blood sugar often shows up as a cluster of symptoms: unusual thirst, frequent urination, and fatigue that feels disproportionate to your activity level. These signs can develop gradually over weeks or months, which makes them easy to dismiss. But they follow a predictable biological pattern, and knowing what to look for can help you catch the problem early, whether or not you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes.

The Most Common Early Signs

The hallmark symptoms of high blood sugar are excessive thirst, frequent urination, and persistent tiredness. These three are closely linked. When glucose builds up in your bloodstream, your kidneys work harder to filter and absorb the excess. Eventually they can’t keep up, and the extra sugar spills into your urine, pulling water from your body’s tissues along with it. That fluid loss triggers dehydration, which makes you thirsty. Drinking more to compensate then sends you to the bathroom even more often. The cycle feeds on itself.

Beyond this triad, watch for:

  • Blurry vision that comes and goes, caused by fluid shifts in the lens of your eye
  • Unintentional weight loss, especially if you haven’t changed your diet or exercise habits
  • Slow-healing cuts or sores, since elevated glucose impairs your body’s ability to repair tissue
  • Tingling or numbness in your hands or feet

These symptoms can be subtle at first. Many people with prediabetes or early type 2 diabetes have blood sugar levels that are consistently above normal for months before they notice anything wrong. That’s one reason routine blood tests matter, even when you feel fine.

When High Blood Sugar Becomes an Emergency

Severely elevated blood sugar can trigger a dangerous condition called diabetic ketoacidosis, where your body starts breaking down fat for energy and produces acids called ketones. This is more common in type 1 diabetes but can happen in type 2 as well. The symptoms escalate quickly and are hard to ignore: fast, deep breathing; fruity-smelling breath; nausea and vomiting; stomach pain; a flushed face; and extreme fatigue or confusion.

The CDC advises going to the emergency room if your blood sugar stays at 300 mg/dL or above, your breath smells fruity, you can’t keep food or drinks down, or you’re having trouble breathing. These symptoms can worsen within hours, so waiting to “see if it passes” is risky.

What the Numbers Actually Mean

If you suspect high blood sugar, a simple blood test can confirm it. There are several ways to measure it, and each uses different thresholds.

Fasting Blood Sugar

This test is taken after you haven’t eaten for at least eight hours, typically first thing in the morning. A result below 100 mg/dL is normal. Between 100 and 125 mg/dL falls into the prediabetes range. A reading of 126 mg/dL or higher on two separate tests indicates diabetes.

Post-Meal Blood Sugar

A glucose tolerance test measures how your body handles sugar after drinking a standardized glucose solution. Two hours later, a reading under 140 mg/dL is normal. Between 140 and 199 mg/dL suggests prediabetes, and 200 mg/dL or above means diabetes.

Random Blood Sugar

This is a blood draw taken at any time, regardless of when you last ate. A result of 200 mg/dL or higher, combined with symptoms like excessive thirst or frequent urination, suggests diabetes.

A1C Test

Unlike the tests above, the A1C doesn’t capture a single moment. It reflects your average blood sugar over the previous two to three months by measuring how much glucose has attached to your red blood cells. An A1C below 5.7% is normal. Between 5.7% and 6.4% indicates prediabetes. At 6.5% or higher, the diagnosis is diabetes. This test is particularly useful because it reveals patterns that a single fasting reading might miss.

How to Check at Home

You don’t need a lab visit every time you want to know your blood sugar. Two types of home devices can give you that information, though they work differently.

A blood glucose meter (sometimes called a glucometer) uses a small drop of blood from a finger prick and a disposable test strip. You get a result in seconds. These devices are affordable and widely available, though the FDA allows them a margin of error of about 15 to 20 percent above or below the actual value. That’s accurate enough for day-to-day decisions, but it means a reading of 100 mg/dL could represent an actual value anywhere from roughly 80 to 120.

Continuous glucose monitors use a small sensor placed just under the skin, typically on your arm or abdomen. They measure glucose levels around the clock and can alert you when your numbers are trending high or low. This is especially valuable for spotting patterns you’d miss with occasional finger sticks, like blood sugar spikes after meals or overnight rises. Some people use both: a CGM for continuous tracking and a finger-stick meter to double-check specific readings.

Why Vision Changes Deserve Attention

Blurry vision is one of the earlier symptoms people notice, but the way high blood sugar damages the eyes goes well beyond temporary blurriness. Over time, excess glucose weakens the tiny blood vessels that supply the retina. In the early stages, the vessel walls develop small bulges that can leak fluid and blood. This may cause no noticeable symptoms at first.

As the damage progresses, the eye tries to compensate by growing new blood vessels, but these replacements are fragile and leak easily. Fluid can build up in the center of the retina, distorting vision. In advanced cases, scar tissue from abnormal blood vessel growth can pull the retina away from the back of the eye, leading to permanent vision loss. This entire process, known as diabetic retinopathy, can unfold over years with minimal warning signs early on, which is why regular eye exams are important for anyone with elevated blood sugar.

Symptoms You Might Not Connect to Blood Sugar

Some effects of chronically high blood sugar are easy to attribute to other causes. Frequent yeast infections or urinary tract infections can result from excess glucose creating a more hospitable environment for bacteria and fungi. Dry, itchy skin may stem from the dehydration that accompanies high blood sugar. Irritability and difficulty concentrating can be related to your brain not getting the steady energy supply it needs when glucose regulation is off.

Numbness or tingling in your extremities, sometimes described as a “pins and needles” sensation, happens because sustained high glucose damages the small nerve fibers in your hands and feet. This nerve damage develops gradually, so it’s often written off as poor circulation or simply “getting older.” If you’re experiencing several of these symptoms together, the combination is more telling than any single one.
