Your body gives several reliable signals before, during, and after ovulation. The clearest one you can observe at home is a change in cervical mucus: it becomes clear, stretchy, and slippery, resembling raw egg whites, in the days leading up to egg release. Other signs include a slight rise in resting body temperature, one-sided pelvic pain, and a positive result on an ovulation predictor kit. Some of these signs tell you ovulation is coming, while others confirm it already happened, and knowing the difference matters.
Cervical Mucus: The Most Visible Sign
Cervical mucus changes in a predictable pattern throughout your cycle, and tracking it is one of the oldest and most accessible ways to identify your fertile window. After your period ends, discharge is typically dry or tacky, white or slightly yellow. Over the next several days it becomes sticky, then creamy with a yogurt-like texture. None of this signals fertility yet.
Around days 10 to 14 of a typical cycle, mucus shifts dramatically. It turns clear, wet, and stretchy, with a texture and appearance often compared to raw egg whites. You can test this by pressing a small amount between your thumb and forefinger: fertile-quality mucus stretches into a thin strand without breaking. This slippery mucus helps sperm travel through the cervix and survive longer inside the reproductive tract, so its appearance means ovulation is close.
After ovulation, the pattern reverses quickly. Mucus becomes thick, white, and dry again, and stays that way until your next period. Seeing that transition from wet and stretchy to dry and sticky is a good indication that ovulation has passed.
Ovulation Predictor Kits
Home ovulation tests work by detecting a hormone called luteinizing hormone (LH) in your urine. LH surges roughly 36 to 40 hours before the egg is released, so a positive test gives you advance warning. Once LH is detectable in urine, ovulation typically follows within 12 to 24 hours.
Not all kits perform equally well, though. A study presented by the Association for Diagnostics and Laboratory Medicine found that of three digital ovulation tests available in the U.S., only one reliably detected ovulation to within one day in about 95% of women tested. The other two managed that accuracy in only about half of women. If you’re choosing a kit, digital readers tend to be easier to interpret than the line-based strips, which require you to judge whether a test line is as dark as the control line.
Keep in mind that these tests tell you ovulation is approaching, not that it definitely occurred. A positive result means your body is gearing up, but in rare cases a surge can happen without an egg actually being released.
Basal Body Temperature
Your resting body temperature, measured first thing in the morning before you get out of bed, shifts slightly after ovulation. The increase is small, typically less than half a degree Fahrenheit (about 0.3°C), and it stays elevated until your next period starts. You need a thermometer accurate to at least one decimal place, and you need to measure at the same time each morning for the pattern to be useful.
The catch is that this method only confirms ovulation after the fact. By the time you see the temperature shift, the egg has already been released. Over several months, though, the data helps you predict when ovulation is likely to happen in future cycles. The temperature rise is caused by progesterone, the hormone your body produces after egg release, so a sustained increase over three or more days is a strong confirmation that ovulation took place.
Ovulation Pain
Some women feel a twinge, cramp, or dull ache on one side of the lower abdomen around the time of ovulation. This sensation, sometimes called mittelschmerz (German for “middle pain”), happens when the egg breaks through the surface of the ovary. It can last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, though occasionally it lingers for a day or two. Some women experience it every cycle, while others notice it only occasionally or not at all.
Ovulation pain typically alternates sides from month to month, depending on which ovary releases the egg. It’s useful as a supporting clue but not reliable enough on its own to pinpoint your fertile window, since the sensation can be subtle and easy to confuse with digestive discomfort.
How the Fertile Window Actually Works
A released egg survives for less than 24 hours. That sounds like a narrow target, but the fertile window is wider than that because sperm can live inside the reproductive tract for up to five days. This means the most fertile days are the few days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself.
Ovulation doesn’t always happen on the same cycle day. What stays relatively consistent is the luteal phase, the stretch between ovulation and your next period. That phase averages 12 to 14 days, with a normal range of 10 to 17 days. So if your cycle is 28 days, ovulation likely falls around day 14. If your cycle is 32 days, ovulation probably happens closer to day 18. Counting backward from your expected period is often more accurate than counting forward from your last one.
Confirming Ovulation With a Blood Test
If you want definitive proof that ovulation happened, a progesterone blood test is the most reliable method. Progesterone rises sharply after the egg is released. Your provider will typically draw blood about a week after suspected ovulation. Normal luteal-phase progesterone falls between 2 and 25 ng/mL, though the specific number your provider looks for depends on where you are in the luteal phase and what they’re evaluating. A clearly elevated reading confirms that an egg was released that cycle.
This test is especially useful if you’ve been tracking signs at home but aren’t sure whether ovulation is actually occurring, which can be the case with irregular cycles or certain hormonal conditions.
Saliva Ferning Tests
Some over-the-counter tests use a small microscope to examine dried saliva. When estrogen rises near ovulation, the salt content in your saliva increases, and dried saliva can form a fern-like crystallization pattern visible under magnification. It’s a real biological phenomenon, but the FDA warns it’s not very reliable. Not all women produce a visible ferning pattern. Eating, drinking, smoking, and brushing your teeth can disrupt results. Some women fern on certain fertile days but not others, and ferning can even show up during pregnancy or in men. Saliva tests should not be used as a primary method for identifying ovulation.
Combining Methods for Better Accuracy
No single sign is perfectly reliable on its own. Cervical mucus tells you fertility is approaching but requires consistent observation. Ovulation kits detect the hormonal trigger but can’t guarantee the egg was released. Basal temperature confirms ovulation but only in hindsight. The most accurate picture comes from layering two or three of these methods together.
A practical approach: start by tracking cervical mucus daily, use an ovulation predictor kit when mucus becomes wet and stretchy, and confirm the pattern with basal temperature readings over a few cycles. After two or three months, you’ll have a clear sense of your personal ovulation timeline, including how long your cycle runs, which day ovulation typically falls on, and what your body’s specific signals look and feel like.
