Your body gives several reliable signals when you’re ovulating, from changes in cervical mucus to a slight rise in body temperature. Most people ovulate about 14 days before their next period starts, but the exact day varies from cycle to cycle. Learning to read these signs can help whether you’re trying to conceive or simply want to understand your cycle better.
Cervical Mucus Changes
The most practical, no-cost way to check for ovulation is to pay attention to your cervical mucus. It changes in a predictable pattern throughout your cycle, and the texture tells you a lot about where you are in your fertile window.
In the days after your period, mucus is typically dry or sticky, almost paste-like, and white or light yellow. As you move closer to ovulation, it becomes creamy, smooth, and white, similar to yogurt. Then, right before ovulation, it shifts dramatically: clear, slippery, stretchy, and wet. The classic comparison is raw egg whites. If you can stretch it between your fingers without it breaking, you’re likely at your most fertile point. After ovulation passes, mucus returns to thick and dry relatively quickly.
Checking is straightforward. You can look at the mucus on toilet paper before wiping, or gently collect some with clean fingers. The key distinction is simple: dry or sticky means you’re probably not fertile yet. Wet, slippery, or stretchy means you likely are.
Ovulation Predictor Kits
Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) are urine test strips that detect a surge in luteinizing hormone, the hormone that triggers your ovary to release an egg. They’re widely available at pharmacies and work similarly to a pregnancy test: you dip a strip in urine and read the result.
The timing works like this. Your body releases a burst of LH about 36 to 40 hours before ovulation. Once that surge shows up in your urine, ovulation typically follows within 12 to 24 hours. That makes OPKs one of the few tools that give you a heads-up before ovulation happens, rather than confirming it after the fact. Since a released egg survives for less than 24 hours, that advance warning matters if you’re trying to conceive.
For best results, test in the early afternoon rather than first thing in the morning, and try to avoid drinking a lot of fluids for a couple hours beforehand so the hormone isn’t too diluted. Start testing a few days before you expect to ovulate. If your cycle is 28 days, that means starting around day 10 or 11.
Basal Body Temperature
Your resting body temperature rises slightly after ovulation and stays elevated until your next period. The increase is small, anywhere from 0.4°F to 1°F (0.22°C to 0.56°C), so you need a thermometer that reads to at least one decimal place. A regular fever thermometer often isn’t precise enough.
The catch is that this method only confirms ovulation after it has already happened. You take your temperature every morning before getting out of bed, at roughly the same time, and log it. After several months of charting, you’ll start to see a pattern: a cluster of lower temperatures in the first half of your cycle and a noticeable shift upward in the second half. The day before that shift is roughly when you ovulated. Over time, this helps you predict future cycles, but it won’t give you a real-time alert the way an OPK does.
Sleep quality, alcohol, illness, and even getting up to use the bathroom can all throw off a single reading, so the method works best when you look at the overall trend rather than any one morning’s number.
Wearable Temperature Trackers
Wrist-worn devices that continuously measure skin temperature overnight are becoming a popular alternative to manual temperature charting. A 2024 study of 262 people across 899 menstrual cycles found that algorithms using overnight wrist temperature identified ovulation day within two days in up to 89% of cycles. That outperformed traditional oral temperature logging, which provided an estimate in a smaller percentage of cycles and with slightly less accuracy.
These wearables won’t tell you in the moment that you’re ovulating, but they can learn your pattern over several cycles and give increasingly accurate predictions. They remove the hassle of waking at the same time every day and manually recording numbers, which makes them easier to stick with long term.
Physical Symptoms You Might Notice
Some people feel a dull ache or sharp twinge on one side of the lower abdomen around the time of ovulation. This is called mittelschmerz (German for “middle pain”), and it occurs on whichever side the ovary is releasing an egg that month. It typically lasts a few minutes to a few hours, though it can occasionally stretch to a day or two. Some people experience it every single cycle, others only occasionally, and many never notice it at all. So while it can be a helpful clue, it’s not something to rely on as your only indicator.
Other secondary signs some people report around ovulation include mild breast tenderness, a slight increase in sex drive, light spotting, and bloating. These vary widely from person to person and cycle to cycle, so they’re best used as supporting evidence alongside more reliable signs like mucus changes or OPK results.
Cervical Position
Your cervix physically shifts during your cycle. Around ovulation, it moves higher in the vaginal canal, becomes softer to the touch, feels slightly open, and is noticeably wetter. After ovulation, it drops lower, firms up, and closes. You can check this by inserting a clean finger and noting the texture and height, though it takes a few cycles of practice before the differences become obvious.
This method works best as a complement to mucus tracking rather than a standalone tool. Checking at the same time each day, in the same position (many people find squatting easiest), gives the most consistent results.
Saliva Ferning Tests
A less common option is a reusable mini-microscope that lets you examine your dried saliva for a fern-like crystal pattern. Rising estrogen near ovulation can cause saliva to crystallize in this distinctive shape. The FDA notes several limitations, though: not everyone produces a visible fern pattern, smoking or eating or drinking beforehand can disrupt results, and ferning sometimes shows up outside the fertile window or even in men. These kits are not considered reliable enough to use for avoiding pregnancy, and most people find OPKs or mucus tracking more straightforward.
Confirming Ovulation With a Blood Test
If you’ve been tracking at home and want medical confirmation, a blood test measuring progesterone can verify that ovulation occurred. Progesterone rises after the egg is released, so the test is typically drawn about a week after suspected ovulation (around day 21 to 23 of a 28-day cycle). A level above 10 ng/mL generally confirms that ovulation happened normally. Levels below that may suggest it didn’t occur, or that the timing of the blood draw was off. This is a tool your provider might use if you’re having difficulty conceiving or suspect irregular ovulation.
Combining Methods for Accuracy
No single sign is perfectly reliable on its own. Cervical mucus gives you a real-time window into your fertility but requires some learning curve. OPKs offer a clear positive or negative result but only capture the LH surge. Temperature tracking confirms ovulation retrospectively. The most accurate picture comes from layering two or three of these together. Tracking mucus daily and adding OPK strips as you notice the shift toward wet, stretchy mucus is a practical combination that doesn’t require expensive devices.
After three or four cycles of observation, most people develop a solid sense of when in their cycle ovulation tends to happen. Your body’s signals become easier to read with practice, and you’ll start to recognize your own pattern rather than relying on generic cycle-length calculators.
