How Do You Know When You’re Ovulating: Key Signs

Your body gives several reliable signals before and during ovulation, from changes in cervical mucus to a slight rise in body temperature. The trick is that some signs appear before the egg is released (helping you predict it), while others only confirm ovulation after the fact. Knowing the difference matters whether you’re trying to conceive or simply want to understand your cycle.

What Actually Happens During Ovulation

Ovulation is the moment an ovary releases a mature egg into the fallopian tube. It’s triggered by a sharp spike in luteinizing hormone (LH), and the egg is released roughly 36 to 40 hours after that spike begins. Once released, the egg survives for about 12 to 24 hours. Sperm, on the other hand, can live inside the reproductive tract for 3 to 5 days. That overlap creates a fertile window of roughly six days: the five days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself.

For most people with a 28-day cycle, ovulation happens around day 14, but cycles vary. Stress, illness, travel, and hormonal shifts can push ovulation earlier or later in any given month, which is why tracking your body’s signals is more useful than counting calendar days alone.

Cervical Mucus: The Most Visible Clue

The single most practical sign of approaching ovulation is a change in cervical mucus. This discharge shifts in texture, color, and amount throughout your cycle in a predictable pattern driven by rising estrogen levels.

In the days right after your period, you’ll notice very little discharge, and what’s there tends to be dry or tacky and white or slightly yellow. Over the next several days it becomes sticky, then transitions to a creamy, yogurt-like consistency that feels wet and looks cloudy. The key shift happens around days 10 to 14 of a typical cycle: the mucus becomes clear, stretchy, slippery, and resembles raw egg whites. You can test this by pressing a small amount between your thumb and forefinger and gently pulling them apart. Fertile mucus will stretch into a thin strand without breaking.

This “egg white” mucus isn’t just a signal. It’s functional. The thin, slippery texture acts like a transport system, helping sperm travel through the cervix and into the fallopian tubes. It also coats the cervix to trap sperm so they can survive longer while waiting for the egg. After ovulation, mucus dries up quickly and becomes thick or pasty again, staying that way until your next period.

Basal Body Temperature

Your basal body temperature (BBT) is your body’s resting temperature, taken first thing in the morning before you sit up, talk, or check your phone. After ovulation, the hormone progesterone causes a small but measurable temperature increase, typically less than half a degree Fahrenheit (about 0.3°C). That shift is subtle enough that you need a thermometer that reads to two decimal places to catch it.

Ovulation has likely occurred when that slightly higher temperature holds steady for three days or more. The limitation of BBT tracking is that it only confirms ovulation after it’s already happened. It won’t warn you in advance. But over several months of daily tracking, you’ll start to see your personal pattern and can use it alongside other signs to narrow down your fertile window in future cycles.

Ovulation Pain

Some people feel a distinct twinge or cramping on one side of the lower abdomen around the time of ovulation. This sensation, called mittelschmerz (German for “middle pain”), ranges from a mild pinch to a sharper ache. It occurs on the side of whichever ovary is releasing an egg that month, so it may switch sides from cycle to cycle or stay on the same side for several months in a row.

The pain typically lasts a few minutes to a few hours, though it can occasionally linger for a day or two. Not everyone experiences it. Some people feel it every month, others only occasionally, and many never notice it at all. If you do feel it, it’s a useful real-time indicator, but it’s not reliable enough to use as your only tracking method.

LH Test Strips

Over-the-counter ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) detect the LH surge in your urine. Since ovulation follows that surge by about 36 to 40 hours, a positive test tells you you’re approaching your most fertile window. Most kits come as simple test strips you dip in a urine sample; a line as dark as or darker than the control line indicates a surge.

For best results, test in the early afternoon rather than first thing in the morning, since LH tends to spike during the day and takes a few hours to show up in urine. Start testing a few days before you expect to ovulate. If your cycle is 28 days, that means beginning around day 10 or 11. If your cycle is irregular, start testing a few days after your period ends and continue until you get a positive result or your period arrives.

Other Signs You Might Notice

Rising estrogen before ovulation can produce a handful of subtler symptoms. Some people notice mild breast tenderness, a slight increase in sex drive, or light spotting (a small amount of pink or brown discharge). Others report feeling more energetic or notice mild bloating. These signs vary widely from person to person and cycle to cycle, so they’re best treated as supporting evidence rather than standalone indicators.

Your cervix itself also changes. In the days leading up to ovulation, it moves higher in the vaginal canal and becomes softer and slightly open. After ovulation, it drops lower, firms up, and closes. Checking cervical position takes some practice and consistency, but paired with mucus observations, it adds another layer of information.

Combining Methods for Accuracy

No single sign is perfectly reliable on its own. Cervical mucus gives you advance warning but can be affected by hydration, medications, or infections. BBT confirms ovulation but only in hindsight. LH strips are predictive but can occasionally show a surge without actual ovulation following. Ovulation pain is helpful when present but doesn’t happen for everyone.

The most accurate approach is to layer two or three methods together. Track cervical mucus daily to spot the transition to egg-white consistency, use LH strips to confirm the hormonal surge, and log your BBT each morning to verify that ovulation actually occurred. After two or three cycles of combined tracking, most people develop a clear picture of their personal ovulation pattern, including which days tend to be their most fertile and which signals show up most consistently.
