Your body gives off several reliable signals before and during ovulation, from changes in cervical mucus to a slight rise in body temperature. Most people ovulate once per cycle, typically around day 14 of a 28-day cycle, though the exact timing varies widely from person to person and even month to month. Learning to read these signs can help you pinpoint your most fertile days whether you’re trying to conceive or simply want to understand your body better.
Cervical Mucus Is the Most Reliable Daily Signal
The single most useful thing you can track day to day is your cervical mucus. Its texture, color, and stretchiness change predictably as you move through your cycle, driven by shifting hormone levels. Checking it takes seconds and costs nothing.
In the days right after your period, you’ll likely notice very little discharge. What’s there tends to feel dry or sticky, almost paste-like, and may look white or light yellow. As you move closer to ovulation, the mucus becomes creamy and smooth, similar to the consistency of yogurt. Then, in the day or two just before ovulation, it shifts dramatically: clear, slippery, and stretchy, very much like raw egg whites. If you pinch it between your thumb and finger, it will stretch into a strand without breaking. This egg-white stage is your peak fertility window. Once ovulation passes, the mucus dries up or turns sticky again.
The simple rule: if it’s dry or sticky, you’re probably not fertile yet. If it’s wet, slippery, or slimy, you’re likely in your fertile window.
Ovulation Predictor Kits and the LH Surge
Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs), available at any pharmacy, work by detecting a hormone called luteinizing hormone (LH) in your urine. Your body releases a surge of LH right before the egg is released. Once that surge shows up in urine, ovulation typically follows within 12 to 24 hours. In the bloodstream, the timeline is a bit longer: ovulation occurs roughly 36 to 40 hours after LH levels begin to rise.
This makes OPKs one of the most time-sensitive tools available. A positive result means you’re about to ovulate, not that you already have. That distinction matters because a released egg survives for less than 24 hours. If you’re trying to conceive, the best window is the day of the positive test and the following day.
Basal Body Temperature Confirms Ovulation After the Fact
Your basal body temperature (BBT) is your temperature at complete rest, taken first thing in the morning before you sit up or move around. After ovulation, progesterone causes a small but measurable increase, typically less than half a degree Fahrenheit (about 0.3°C). The shift is subtle enough that you need a thermometer accurate to a tenth of a degree to catch it.
The catch with BBT tracking is that it only tells you ovulation has already happened. By the time you see the temperature rise, the egg has already been released. That makes it less useful for timing intercourse in a single cycle but very useful over several months for identifying your personal pattern. If your temperature consistently rises around day 15, for example, you can start watching for other signs a few days earlier in future cycles.
Illness, poor sleep, alcohol, and even getting up to use the bathroom can throw off the reading. Consistency matters: take your temperature at the same time every morning, ideally after at least three hours of uninterrupted sleep.
Physical Sensations You Might Notice
Some people feel ovulation happening. The sensation, sometimes called mittelschmerz (German for “middle pain”), is a twinge or ache on one side of the lower abdomen. It can range from a dull cramp similar to menstrual pain to a sharp, sudden pang. The side may switch from month to month, depending on which ovary releases the egg.
The pain usually lasts anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, though it can occasionally stretch to a day or two. Some people experience it every cycle, others only occasionally, and many never notice it at all. You might also see a small amount of spotting or light discharge around the same time. On its own, ovulation pain isn’t precise enough to use as your primary tracking method, but paired with mucus changes or a positive OPK, it adds a helpful data point.
Cervical Position Changes
If you’re comfortable with internal self-checks, the cervix itself offers clues. For most of your cycle, the cervix sits relatively low, feels firm (like the tip of your nose), and is closed. Around ovulation, rising estrogen causes it to shift higher, soften (closer to the feel of your lips), and open slightly. After ovulation, it drops back down and firms up again.
This takes some practice to learn. The differences are subtle, and what “high” or “low” feels like varies from person to person. Checking at the same time each day, in the same position, for a few cycles helps you build a personal baseline.
How Accurate Are Cycle-Tracking Apps?
Fertility apps are popular, but their accuracy varies enormously. A systematic review found that a large proportion of apps are not based on evidence-based methods of fertility awareness. One study comparing two well-known apps using identical cycle data found that only 57% of cycles had the same predicted fertile-window start date, and just 36% agreed on when the window ended. In some cases, apps placed the start of the fertile window inside the actual physiologic fertile window only 4% to 30% of the time, depending on the algorithm.
Apps that rely solely on calendar math (counting days from your last period) are the least reliable because they assume your cycle length and ovulation timing are consistent. Apps that incorporate real data you enter, like cervical mucus observations or OPK results, perform significantly better. A review of twelve conception-focused apps found that the majority were poor predictors of the most fertile days unless they factored in some measure of estrogenic activity, such as mucus quality. If you use an app, treat its predictions as rough estimates and rely on your body’s physical signals to confirm timing.
Less Common Signs Worth Knowing
A few other changes can accompany ovulation, though they’re harder to track reliably. Some people notice breast tenderness, increased sex drive, or a heightened sense of smell in the days around ovulation. These are driven by the same hormonal shifts that cause the more measurable signs, but they’re subjective enough that they work best as supporting evidence rather than primary indicators.
There are also saliva-based ovulation tests. When estrogen rises near ovulation, dried saliva can form a distinctive fern-shaped crystal pattern visible under a small microscope. At other points in your cycle, you’ll see only dots and circles. These mini-microscopes are reusable and inexpensive, though the FDA notes that the patterns can sometimes be difficult to interpret.
Combining Methods for the Clearest Picture
No single sign is perfectly reliable on its own. Cervical mucus gives you the best real-time daily signal. OPKs offer a precise hormonal heads-up 12 to 24 hours before the egg drops. BBT confirms that ovulation actually occurred. Physical sensations like ovulation pain add context. The most accurate approach layers two or three of these together.
If you’re just starting, begin with cervical mucus tracking. It’s free, immediate, and surprisingly informative once you know what to look for. Add OPKs if you want hormonal confirmation, and consider BBT charting for a few months to learn your personal pattern. Over two or three cycles, you’ll develop a clear sense of when your body ovulates, which is far more useful than any calendar calculation.
