How Do You Know You’re Ovulating? Signs to Track

Your body gives several reliable signals before, during, and after ovulation, and learning to read them can pinpoint your most fertile days with surprising accuracy. Most signs fall into two categories: things you can observe yourself (like changes in cervical mucus, body temperature, and physical sensations) and things you can measure with at-home tests. Used together, these methods create a clear picture of when your egg is released each cycle.

Cervical Mucus Changes

The single most practical sign of approaching ovulation is a change in cervical mucus. Throughout your cycle, the consistency shifts in a predictable pattern. In the days after your period, you may notice very little discharge. As estrogen rises, mucus becomes sticky or pasty, then creamy and white. The key shift happens in the three or four days just before ovulation: the mucus turns clear, stretchy, and slippery, closely resembling raw egg whites.

This “egg white” mucus is your body’s way of helping sperm travel efficiently. If you stretch it between your fingers, it can pull into a thin strand without breaking. On a 28-day cycle, this fertile mucus typically appears around days 10 to 14, though the exact timing varies from person to person and cycle to cycle. Once ovulation passes, mucus quickly becomes thicker, cloudier, or dries up altogether. Tracking this pattern over a few months gives you a reliable preview of your fertile window without any tools or tests.

Basal Body Temperature

Your resting body temperature shifts slightly after ovulation. Before the egg is released, your baseline temperature tends to be lower. After ovulation, it rises by 0.4°F to 1°F (0.22°C to 0.56°C) and stays elevated until your next period begins. The catch is that this rise confirms ovulation already happened, so it’s more useful for confirming a pattern over several cycles than for predicting the exact day in real time.

To track it accurately, take your temperature first thing in the morning before getting out of bed, ideally at the same time each day. Use a thermometer that reads to two decimal places, since you’re looking for a small shift. After two or three months of charting, you’ll start to see when in your cycle the temperature spike typically occurs. That historical pattern helps you anticipate ovulation in future cycles.

Ovulation Predictor Kits

Urine-based ovulation test strips detect a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH), the hormone that triggers the release of an egg. Ovulation typically happens 36 to 40 hours after this LH surge begins, which means a positive test tells you ovulation is approaching within the next day or two. Studies show these strips are up to 99% effective at detecting the surge, making them the most precise at-home tool available.

You use them much like a pregnancy test: dip a strip in urine or hold it in your stream, then read the result in a few minutes. Most people start testing a few days before they expect to ovulate, based on their average cycle length. A positive result (a test line as dark or darker than the control line) signals your most fertile window is open right now. Pairing this with cervical mucus tracking gives you both a heads-up from your body and a hormonal confirmation.

Physical Sensations Around Ovulation

Some people feel ovulation happen. A sensation called mittelschmerz (German for “middle pain”) produces a dull, achy cramp or a sharp, sudden twinge on one side of the lower abdomen. It corresponds to the side where the ovary is releasing an egg that cycle. The pain usually lasts a few minutes to a few hours, though it can occasionally persist for a day or two. Some people experience it every month, others only occasionally, and many never notice it at all.

Other physical signs are subtler. You might notice light spotting, a brief increase in sex drive, mild breast tenderness, or a heightened sense of smell. None of these are reliable enough on their own to confirm ovulation, but when they appear alongside mucus changes or a positive test strip, they add useful confirmation.

Cervical Position

Your cervix itself changes position and texture throughout your cycle. During ovulation, it becomes soft (like the feel of your lips rather than the tip of your nose), sits higher in the vaginal canal, opens slightly, and feels wet. This is sometimes summarized with the acronym SHOW: short, high, open, and wet. Outside of ovulation, the cervix drops lower, firms up, and closes.

Checking cervical position takes some practice and isn’t for everyone, but it’s another free, tool-free method. You insert a clean finger and note what you feel. It’s most useful after a few cycles of consistent checking, once you learn what your own baseline feels like at different points in your cycle.

Your Fertile Window in Context

An egg survives only about 12 to 24 hours after release. Sperm, on the other hand, can live inside the reproductive tract for three to five days. This means your actual fertile window is roughly six days long: the five days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself. The highest chances of conception fall in the two to three days leading up to egg release, which is why signs that predict ovulation (cervical mucus, LH strips) tend to be more useful for timing than signs that confirm it already happened (temperature rise).

If you’re tracking to conceive, combining at least two methods gives the clearest picture. Cervical mucus tells you fertility is approaching, an ovulation strip confirms the hormonal trigger has fired, and temperature charting over several months reveals your personal pattern. If you’re tracking to understand your cycle or manage symptoms, even just paying attention to mucus changes can teach you a lot about your body’s rhythm without any cost or technology.

Saliva Ferning Tests

A less common option is the saliva ferning test, which uses a small microscope to look for a fern-shaped crystal pattern in dried saliva. Rising estrogen near ovulation can cause saliva to crystallize this way. However, the FDA notes significant limitations: not all people produce a visible fern pattern, and results can be disrupted by smoking, eating, drinking, or even brushing your teeth beforehand. Some people fern outside their fertile window, and the patterns can appear during pregnancy or even in men. These tests are not considered reliable enough to use for preventing pregnancy, and they’re generally less practical than mucus tracking or LH strips.

When Ovulation Signs Are Unclear

Irregular cycles, hormonal conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome, recent use of hormonal birth control, breastfeeding, and high stress can all make ovulation signs harder to read. If your cycles vary widely in length, the timing of ovulation shifts too, which means you may need to test over a wider window or track for more months before a clear pattern emerges. A blood test measuring progesterone levels in the second half of your cycle can confirm whether ovulation occurred. Levels between 2 and 25 ng/mL during this phase generally indicate that an egg was released. This is something a clinician can order if you’ve been tracking without clear results and want a definitive answer.
