There is no way to quickly sober up. Your liver processes alcohol at a fixed rate of about 0.015% blood alcohol concentration per hour, and nothing you do can meaningfully speed that up. Coffee, cold showers, exercise, supplements: none of them lower your blood alcohol level faster. What they can do is make you feel different while you wait for your body to do its work.
That said, there are things worth doing (and avoiding) while your body clears the alcohol. Here’s what actually happens inside you, what the common tricks really do, and how to estimate when you’ll genuinely be sober.
Why Your Body Has a Fixed Speed Limit
When you drink, a small amount of alcohol leaves through your breath, sweat, and urine. But about 95% of it gets broken down in the liver by an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase. This enzyme converts ethanol into a toxic compound called acetaldehyde, and then a second enzyme converts that into something harmless your body can use for energy.
These enzymes can only work so fast. Think of it like a single-lane toll booth on a highway: no matter how many cars are lined up, they pass through one at a time. Your liver processes roughly one standard drink per hour. A standard drink is 14 grams of pure alcohol, which is one regular beer, one 5-ounce glass of wine, or one 1.5-ounce shot of liquor. If you’ve had four drinks, you’re looking at roughly four hours before your body clears that alcohol, and possibly longer depending on your size, sex, genetics, and liver health.
What Coffee and Energy Drinks Actually Do
Caffeine is the most common “sobering up” strategy, and it’s also the most dangerous myth. The CDC is clear on this: caffeine does not reduce the effects of alcohol on your body. Your blood alcohol level stays exactly the same whether you drink coffee or not.
What caffeine does is mask how drunk you feel. It makes you more alert, which can trick you into thinking you’re less impaired. This is genuinely risky. People who mix caffeine and alcohol tend to drink more and make worse decisions about driving because they feel functional when they aren’t. Your reaction time, coordination, and judgment remain impaired regardless of how awake you feel. A wide-awake drunk person is still a drunk person.
Cold Showers, Exercise, and Fresh Air
A cold shower will shock you into feeling more alert, similar to caffeine. It does nothing to your blood alcohol level. The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation puts it simply: the body rids itself of alcohol on a fixed schedule, and a cold shower has no effect on that rate.
Exercise doesn’t help either. While physical activity increases your breathing and sweating slightly, the amount of alcohol leaving through those routes is negligible. You exhale and sweat out such a tiny fraction of total alcohol that even vigorous exercise won’t make a meaningful difference. What it will do is dehydrate you further and impair your coordination in a state where you’re already unsteady. Going for a run while intoxicated is a good way to get hurt.
Fresh air falls into the same category. It may clear your head briefly, but your BAC doesn’t care about the temperature outside.
Does Eating Help?
This one is slightly more nuanced. Eating before or during drinking slows alcohol absorption, which means your blood alcohol level peaks lower and later. That’s genuinely helpful, but it’s a prevention strategy, not a cure. If you’ve already finished drinking and the alcohol is in your bloodstream, food won’t pull it back out.
There is some evidence that eating after drinking can help modestly. One study found that a high-carbohydrate meal reduced peak blood alcohol levels and levels measured two hours after drinking. But the researchers also noted that food had only limited effects on actual impairment, even when it lowered the numbers slightly. So a late-night meal might take a small edge off, but it won’t sober you up in any meaningful timeframe. Its bigger benefit is settling your stomach and giving your body fuel for recovery.
What About Supplements and “Hangover Pills”?
A growing market of pills and powders claims to speed up alcohol metabolism or eliminate hangovers. Many contain ingredients like the amino acid cysteine, which is thought to help your body process acetaldehyde, the toxic byproduct of alcohol breakdown. In theory, that sounds promising.
In practice, there’s no good evidence these products work. According to Northwestern Medicine, no randomized, placebo-controlled studies support these claims. The supplements aren’t regulated by the FDA, so what’s on the label and what the product actually does in your body are two different questions. Save your money.
What Actually Helps While You Wait
Since time is the only real solution, the goal shifts from “sober up fast” to “feel as good as possible while your liver does its job and avoid making things worse.”
- Drink water. Alcohol suppresses a hormone that helps your kidneys retain water, which is why you urinate more when drinking. This leads to dehydration, which causes headaches, fatigue, and nausea. Water won’t lower your BAC, but it addresses the dehydration that makes you feel terrible. Interestingly, research shows that when your body is already dehydrated, it partially blunts alcohol’s diuretic effect to try to restore fluid balance. Still, drinking water between alcoholic drinks and before bed is one of the most useful things you can do.
- Eat something starchy. Bread, rice, pasta, or crackers can help stabilize your blood sugar and settle nausea. Alcohol interferes with your liver’s ability to release glucose, which is part of why you feel shaky and weak.
- Sleep. Your liver keeps working while you sleep, and rest helps your body recover. A few hours of sleep can make the difference between still being impaired and being closer to sober. It won’t speed up metabolism, but it lets time pass productively.
- Stop drinking. This sounds obvious, but every additional drink resets the clock. If you’re trying to sober up, the single most impactful decision is to stop adding more alcohol to the queue.
How Long Sobriety Actually Takes
At the standard clearance rate of 0.015% BAC per hour, here’s a rough guide. If you had a small shot of liquor, expect about one hour. A pint of beer takes closer to two hours. A large glass of wine can take around three hours. These estimates assume average body size and a healthy liver, and they vary widely between people.
If you’ve had several drinks over the course of an evening, the math adds up fast. Four strong drinks could mean a BAC of 0.08% or higher, which would take over five hours to fully clear. And “fully clear” matters more than people realize. The half-life of alcohol is four to five hours, meaning it takes that long for your body to eliminate just half of what’s in your system. Complete elimination of a heavy night’s drinking can take 25 hours, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
The practical takeaway: if you had your last drink at midnight and you’re wondering if you’re safe to drive at 7 a.m., the answer depends entirely on how much you drank. After three or four drinks, many people still have measurable alcohol in their system the next morning. The only way to be certain is to wait longer than you think you need to.
