Taking your pulse is simple: press two fingers against an artery close to the skin’s surface, count the beats, and you have your heart rate. The whole process takes 30 to 60 seconds and requires no equipment. A normal resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute.
Where to Find Your Pulse
Your body has several spots where arteries run close enough to the skin that you can feel each heartbeat. The two easiest and most reliable are the wrist and the neck.
The wrist (radial artery) is the most common choice. It sits on the inside of your wrist, just below the base of your thumb, in the soft groove between the outer bone and the tendon running down the center. This is the go-to spot for routine checks because it’s easy to reach and comfortable to hold.
The neck (carotid artery) is a good backup when the wrist pulse is hard to feel, which can happen if your hands are cold or your blood pressure is low. Place your fingers in the soft hollow beside your windpipe, just below the jawline. Press gently here. Too much pressure on the carotid artery can actually slow your heart rate and make you feel lightheaded.
Step-by-Step Technique
Start by sitting still for at least five minutes. Activity, even walking across a room, raises your heart rate and will skew a resting measurement. Then follow these steps:
- Place the tips of your index and middle fingers on the inside of your wrist, below the base of your thumb.
- Press lightly until you feel a steady throb. If you press too hard, you’ll compress the artery and lose the pulse.
- Count the beats you feel for a full 60 seconds while watching a clock. Alternatively, count for 30 seconds and multiply by 2.
The 60-second count is more accurate, especially if your rhythm feels uneven. Shorter windows, like counting for 15 seconds and multiplying by 4, amplify any miscounting error. If you lose track, start over rather than guessing.
One critical detail: never use your thumb to feel for a pulse. Your thumb has its own pulse running through it, and you’ll end up counting a mix of your heartbeat and the throb in your thumb, giving you an unreliable number.
What Your Resting Heart Rate Tells You
For most adults, a resting heart rate between 60 and 100 beats per minute is normal. Highly trained endurance athletes often sit much lower, sometimes closer to 40 beats per minute, because their hearts pump more blood with each beat and don’t need to work as hard at rest.
A heart rate consistently above 100 at rest (called tachycardia) or below 60 without athletic conditioning (bradycardia) is worth paying attention to, particularly if it comes with dizziness, chest discomfort, or shortness of breath. Isolated readings outside this range aren’t necessarily alarming. A single cup of coffee or a stressful phone call can push you past 100 temporarily.
Normal Ranges for Children
Kids have naturally faster heart rates than adults, and the younger the child, the faster the baseline. Here’s what to expect at rest:
- Newborn to 3 months: 85 to 205 beats per minute awake, 80 to 160 asleep
- 3 months to 2 years: 100 to 190 awake, 75 to 160 asleep
- 2 to 10 years: 60 to 140 awake, 60 to 90 asleep
- Over 10 years: 60 to 100 awake, 50 to 90 asleep
By the time a child is around 10, their resting heart rate settles into the same range as an adult’s.
What Affects Your Reading
Your heart rate isn’t a fixed number. It shifts throughout the day in response to what your body and brain are doing. Several common factors will change your reading:
Stress and anxiety activate your body’s fight-or-flight response, which directly speeds up your heart. Even low-grade stress, like work pressure or a looming deadline, reduces the natural variation between heartbeats and raises your baseline rate. Caffeine and other stimulants have a similar effect, particularly in people who don’t consume them regularly.
Temperature matters more than most people realize. Heat increases nervous system activity and pushes your heart rate up. If you’ve just come in from a hot day or you’re sitting in a warm room, your reading will run higher than your true resting rate. Noise does the same thing on a smaller scale, activating the same stress pathways even if you don’t feel consciously bothered by it.
For the most accurate and consistent baseline, take your pulse first thing in the morning before getting out of bed, or after sitting quietly in a comfortable room for at least five minutes. Tracking it at the same time each day gives you a much more useful trend than random one-off checks.
Beyond the Number: What the Beat Feels Like
Heart rate is only part of what your pulse can tell you. Pay attention to the rhythm and the strength of each beat as well.
A healthy pulse feels steady and evenly spaced, like a metronome. Occasional skipped beats or extra beats are common and usually harmless, often triggered by caffeine, poor sleep, or stress. But a pulse that feels persistently irregular, with beats that come in unpredictable clusters or long pauses, can signal an irregular heart rhythm worth investigating.
The force of the pulse also carries information. A bounding pulse, where each beat feels unusually strong and forceful under your fingers, can result from exercise, anxiety, fever, or in some cases anemia or thyroid issues. On the other end, a weak or faint pulse (sometimes called thready) can indicate low blood pressure or dehydration. If you notice a dramatic change in how your pulse feels compared to your usual baseline, that’s a more meaningful signal than a single heart rate number on its own.
Manual vs. Wearable Devices
Smartwatches and fitness trackers measure heart rate using light sensors that detect blood flow through your skin. Most consumer wearables are reasonably accurate during rest, but their reliability drops during movement, particularly during intense exercise when your wrist is sweating and the device is bouncing around. They aren’t as precise as medical-grade monitors and shouldn’t replace professional evaluation when something feels off.
Smartphone apps that ask you to place a fingertip over the camera lens tend to be more accurate than those that scan your face from a distance. Still, phone cameras weren’t designed for medical measurement, so treat these readings as rough estimates rather than clinical data.
The manual method remains useful even if you wear a tracker daily. It’s the one technique that works anywhere, costs nothing, and lets you assess rhythm and strength alongside rate. It’s also a good way to spot-check whether your wearable is giving you reliable numbers.
