At 6 weeks of pregnancy, the embryo is roughly 3 to 5 millimeters long, about the size of a pomegranate seed or a small lentil. It doesn’t look like a baby yet. What you’d see on an ultrasound or in a medical illustration is a tiny curved shape, more like a tadpole than a person, with a visible head end and a tapering tail. Despite its size, rapid and dramatic changes are already underway.
How Big Is the Embryo at 6 Weeks?
The standard measurement at this stage is called crown-rump length, though at 6 weeks the embryo is so small that doctors simply measure its greatest length. The median measurement at exactly 42 days (6 weeks, 0 days) is about 3.4 mm, with a normal range from roughly 2 mm on the small end to 5.5 mm on the larger end. That entire range is considered healthy. In a clinical chart widely used for dating pregnancies, a crown-rump length of 5 mm corresponds to 6 weeks even.
To put that in perspective, the embryo would fit on top of your pinky fingernail with room to spare. It’s growing rapidly, though. By the end of week 7, it will roughly double in size.
What You’d See on an Ultrasound
If you have a transvaginal ultrasound at 6 weeks, the first thing visible is the gestational sac, a dark, fluid-filled pocket inside the uterus. Inside that sac, you’ll likely see the yolk sac, a small round structure that provides nutrients to the embryo before the placenta takes over. The yolk sac is one of the first things a provider looks for to confirm a healthy early pregnancy.
Next to the yolk sac, the embryo itself may appear as a tiny bright spot called the fetal pole. At 6 weeks it can be difficult to make out any detail. On screen, it looks like a small grain of rice nestled against a circle. Some people are surprised by how little there is to see at this stage, and that’s completely normal. The embryo is still so small that even high-resolution ultrasound can only show its basic outline.
The Heart Starts Pumping
One of the most significant milestones around week 6 is that the heart begins to pump blood. The heart itself is still a simple tube-like structure, not yet divided into four chambers, but it’s already circulating blood cells through a primitive network of vessels. On ultrasound, this shows up as a flickering motion, sometimes called cardiac activity.
A typical fetal heart rate during pregnancy ranges from 110 to 160 beats per minute, though in these earliest days the rate may start slower and increase over the following weeks. Not every 6-week ultrasound will detect this flicker. If it’s not visible yet, providers will often schedule a follow-up scan a week or so later, since even a few days of growth can make a difference at this scale.
What’s Forming on the Outside
The embryo at 6 weeks has a distinct C-shaped curve with an oversized head region relative to its body. There’s a visible tail-like structure at the bottom, which will eventually be absorbed as the spine develops. The overall shape is recognizably different from what it looked like just a week earlier, but it doesn’t resemble a baby in any familiar way.
Small buds are beginning to appear on the sides of the body. These are the earliest forms of arms. Leg buds follow shortly after. At this point, the buds have no fingers, toes, or joints. They look like tiny bumps or paddles.
On the head end, structures needed to form the eyes and ears are developing. There are no recognizable facial features yet, just thickened areas of tissue called placodes that will eventually become the lenses of the eyes, the inner ear, and the nostrils. Dark spots where the eyes will form may be faintly visible in detailed medical images, but they’re nothing like eyes at this point.
What’s Happening Inside
The embryo is growing from three distinct layers of cells, each responsible for different body systems. The outermost layer is forming the nervous system and brain. The middle layer is building the heart, blood vessels, muscles, and skeleton. The innermost layer will become the digestive system and lungs.
The neural tube, which eventually becomes the brain and spinal cord, closed during weeks 3 and 4 of development. By week 6, the upper end of the neural tube is beginning to specialize into the three primary sections of the brain. This is why folic acid intake in early pregnancy matters so much: the neural tube forms and seals before many people even know they’re pregnant.
Blood cells are actively taking shape, and primitive versions of internal organs are starting to differentiate. The liver, kidneys, and lungs don’t function yet, but the cellular groundwork for each is being laid down during this period.
Embryo, Not Fetus
At 6 weeks, the correct medical term is “embryo,” not “fetus.” The embryonic period runs from roughly week 3 through week 8 of pregnancy, when all the major organ systems are first established. After week 8, the term shifts to “fetus,” which marks the phase where those organ systems grow and mature rather than forming from scratch.
It’s also worth knowing that “6 weeks pregnant” is measured from the first day of the last menstrual period, not from conception. The embryo itself is closer to 4 weeks old in terms of actual development. This dating convention can be confusing, but it’s the standard used in prenatal care and on pregnancy apps.
