How Does a Sinus Rinse Work and Is It Safe?

A sinus rinse works by flushing a saltwater solution through your nasal passages, physically washing out mucus, allergens, and irritants while also triggering biological responses that help your sinuses recover. The Physical Flush

The most immediate effect is mechanical. When you push saline through one nostril, it travels through your nasal cavity and exits the other side (or drains out the same nostril, depending on your head position). Using Safe Water

This is the single most important safety consideration. You should never use plain tap water in a sinus rinse. The CDC recommends using water labeled “distilled” or “sterile” from a store.
