Meaningless speech (where words were unintelligible) had no such effect, suggesting it’s the brain’s attempt to process competing language that creates the interference.

Practical Ways to Reduce Your Exposure
You can’t always control the noise around you, but targeted changes make a real difference. For sleep, the WHO’s 30-dB threshold is the goal. Heavy curtains, weatherstripping around windows, and moving the bed away from street-facing walls all help. White noise machines or fans can mask irregular sounds like traffic spikes, which are more disruptive than steady background noise because they trigger the brain’s alerting response.
For hearing protection, the 85-dB rule is worth memorizing. If you need to raise your voice to be heard at arm’s length, the environment is likely above 85 dB. Foam earplugs reduce exposure by 15 to 30 dB and cost almost nothing. Wearing them while mowing, using power tools, or attending concerts is one of the simplest health interventions available.
At a community level, the numbers make the case clearly. A modest 5-dB reduction in environmental noise across the U.S. would eliminate over a million cases of hypertension and save billions in healthcare costs annually.
