How Does SilverSneakers Work: Membership & Benefits

SilverSneakers is a free fitness program for adults 65 and older that comes bundled with many Medicare Advantage and some Medicare Supplement (Medigap) insurance plans. It gives you access to thousands of gyms and fitness locations nationwide, plus online classes and on-demand workouts, all at no extra cost beyond your regular insurance premium.

Who Qualifies for SilverSneakers

Eligibility comes down to your insurance plan, not your fitness level. Many Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans and select Medigap plans include SilverSneakers as a covered benefit. If your plan includes it, you’re in.

Original Medicare (Parts A and B alone) does not cover SilverSneakers or any gym membership. So if you’re on Original Medicare without a supplemental plan that includes the benefit, you won’t have access. The simplest way to check is to visit the SilverSneakers website and use the eligibility tool, or call the number on your insurance card and ask directly.

How to Sign Up

Getting started takes a few minutes online. Go to SilverSneakers.com and select “Check Eligibility.” You’ll enter your full name, date of birth, zip code, and health insurance details. The system matches your information against participating plans to confirm you’re covered. You’ll also need a valid email address and password to create your account.

After you verify your email, your account activates. Sign back in and you’ll see your dashboard, which displays your digital SilverSneakers Member ID. That ID is what you’ll show at participating gyms to check in. No separate gym membership contract, no monthly fee, no sign-up cost.

What Your Membership Includes

The core benefit is access to participating gyms and community fitness locations across the country. You can use the facility’s basic amenities (equipment, locker rooms, pools where available) under the terms of that location’s standard membership. Specific amenities vary by gym, so it’s worth visiting or calling ahead to see what a particular location offers.

Beyond open gym access, your membership includes instructor-led SilverSneakers group fitness classes designed specifically for older adults. These classes are built around strength, balance, mobility, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. You also get access to live online classes and a library of on-demand workout videos, which means you can exercise from home on your own schedule.

Types of Classes Available

SilverSneakers offers a range of class formats, each targeting different fitness goals. All are designed to be accessible to a wide range of ability levels, and most use a chair for seated exercises or standing support.

  • Classic: A music-driven class using handheld weights, elastic tubing, and a ball to build muscular strength, range of movement, and skills for daily living. You can do exercises seated or standing.
  • Circuit: Alternates low-impact standing choreography with upper body strength work using weights, tubing, and a ball. More movement-focused than Classic, but still low impact.
  • Stability & Balance: Targets strength and reaction time around the ankles, knees, and hips. This class is specifically designed for fall prevention and works for nearly every fitness level.
  • Yoga: A series of seated and standing yoga poses with chair support, focusing on flexibility, balance, and stress reduction through restorative breathing.
  • Splash: A shallow-water class using a signature splash board to vary movement intensity. Safe for non-swimmers and suitable for all skill levels.
  • BOOM Mind: Fuses yoga and Pilates movements with a focus on core muscles, lower body strength, and balance.

Not every location offers every class. Schedules and availability depend on the individual gym or community center.

FLEX Community Classes

SilverSneakers also runs a program called FLEX, which brings classes to non-gym settings like parks, recreation centers, and older-adult living communities. More than 70 class types fall under the FLEX umbrella, including Latin-style dance, walking groups, strength and balance sessions, and circuit workouts. These are taught by certified instructors and are free for SilverSneakers members. In many cases, non-members can attend for a small fee.

FLEX is particularly useful if you’re not comfortable in a traditional gym environment or don’t have a participating gym nearby. The classes tend to be social by nature, held in familiar community spaces where it’s easier to connect with other participants.

Online and At-Home Workouts

Every SilverSneakers member gets access to live virtual classes and an on-demand video library. The live classes are instructor-led and cover a variety of formats, from yoga flow and walking-inspired cardio to strength training with resistance bands. Intensity levels range from beginner to advanced, so you can find something that matches where you are physically.

On-demand videos let you work out whenever it fits your day. These cover similar categories (cardio, strength, flexibility, balance) and can be done with minimal equipment. Some classes recommend a chair, a set of light weights, or a resistance band, but many use only bodyweight. This is a solid option for days when weather, transportation, or energy levels make getting to a gym impractical.

Health Benefits Beyond the Gym

The program’s value goes beyond physical fitness. A 2018 study conducted by MIT’s AgeLab surveyed roughly 1,000 SilverSneakers members and 2,000 non-members and found that membership had direct beneficial effects on physical activity, social isolation, and overall health. Members also experienced indirect health improvements through reduced loneliness and increased activity levels.

That social component matters more than it might seem. Isolation is a significant health risk for older adults, linked to higher rates of depression, cognitive decline, and cardiovascular problems. Regular group classes, whether in person or online, create a built-in reason to interact with others on a consistent basis. For many members, the social routine becomes just as valuable as the exercise itself.

What SilverSneakers Doesn’t Cover

Your membership gives you access to a gym’s basic amenities, not premium services. If a location charges extra for personal training, specialized programs, or certain facility areas beyond the standard membership tier, those costs fall on you. The specifics depend entirely on the gym, so ask at the front desk what’s included under the SilverSneakers benefit before assuming everything is free.

It’s also worth remembering that SilverSneakers is a benefit tied to your insurance plan. If you switch to a plan that doesn’t include it, or if your insurer drops the program from its offerings, you lose access. Checking your plan’s benefits during each enrollment period is a good habit to keep.
