You can find out your baby’s sex as early as 8 weeks into pregnancy with a blood test, though most people learn between 10 and 20 weeks depending on the method they choose. Several options exist, each with different timing, accuracy, and tradeoffs.
Blood Tests: As Early as 8 Weeks
The earliest reliable method is a blood test that analyzes tiny fragments of your baby’s DNA circulating in your bloodstream. As your placenta develops, it sheds small pieces of DNA into your blood. NIPT Screening: 10 Weeks and Up
Noninvasive prenatal testing, commonly called NIPT, is a clinical blood test typically offered starting at 10 weeks. It’s primarily designed to screen for chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome, but it also reveals fetal sex as part of the analysis. Because it’s performed later than the earliest consumer tests, fetal DNA levels are higher and results tend to be more reliable.
NIPT isn’t perfect for sex determination in every case. Several factors can lead to inconclusive or incorrect sex results: higher maternal body weight (which dilutes the fetal DNA concentration), certain medications, recent exercise before the blood draw, infections, or a twin pregnancy where one twin stopped developing early. Ultrasound: 12 to 20 Weeks
Ultrasound is the most familiar way to learn a baby’s sex, but it’s not the earliest. Before 12 weeks, accuracy drops significantly. A large study of 400 pregnancies found that even experienced sonographers achieved only 71 to 78% accuracy between 11 and 14 weeks, and results before 12 weeks were notably less reliable than those after. Male anatomy was easier to identify correctly than female anatomy at these early stages.
The standard anatomy scan at around 18 to 20 weeks is when most people learn their baby’s sex through ultrasound. By that point, the genitals are fully formed and clearly visible in most positions. Even then, a baby’s positioning can occasionally make it impossible to get a clear view, and your sonographer may ask you to come back for another look.
Diagnostic Procedures: 10 to 16 Weeks
Two diagnostic procedures can determine sex with near-certainty because they directly analyze fetal chromosomes rather than screening fragments in your blood. These tests are typically performed for medical reasons, not solely to learn sex, but they do provide that information.
- Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is performed between 10 and 13 weeks. A small sample of placental tissue is collected and analyzed. It’s about 99% accurate for genetic conditions and definitively identifies sex.
- Amniocentesis is performed around 16 weeks. A small amount of amniotic fluid is drawn and tested. It also provides definitive sex identification.
Both procedures carry a small risk of complications, so they’re reserved for pregnancies where there’s a medical indication for genetic diagnosis, such as abnormal screening results or a family history of genetic conditions.
IVF: Before Pregnancy Begins
For people undergoing IVF, sex can be determined before an embryo is even transferred. Preimplantation genetic testing analyzes cells from an embryo at the blastocyst stage (around day 5 after fertilization) and can identify sex chromosomes. This happens before pregnancy, making it technically the earliest possible point of sex determination. Regulations around using this information for sex selection vary by country.
Which Method Makes Sense at Each Stage
Your options depend on how far along you are and what level of certainty you need. Here’s a practical breakdown:
- 6 to 8 weeks: At-home or clinical blood tests are available but carry higher inconclusive rates. Lab-drawn samples are more reliable than finger-prick kits.
