How Early Can You Tell the Sex of a Baby?

You can find out a baby’s sex as early as 6 weeks into pregnancy with an at-home DNA blood test, though most people learn between 10 and 20 weeks depending on the method they use. The answer depends on which test you’re talking about, because each option has a different timeline, accuracy rate, and set of tradeoffs.

At-Home DNA Blood Tests: 6 Weeks

Consumer blood tests like Peekaboo represent the earliest option available. These work by detecting fragments of fetal DNA circulating in your bloodstream. If Y-chromosome DNA is found, the baby is male. If none is detected, the result is female. One clinical study of 215 pregnant women reported 99.5% accuracy starting at 6 weeks.

The catch is that very early in pregnancy, the amount of fetal DNA in your blood can be extremely low. Before 6 weeks, there’s an increased risk of getting an incorrect “female” result simply because the fetal DNA hasn’t reached detectable levels yet. These tests are not validated before that 6-week mark. They also aren’t diagnostic medical tests, so an incorrect result carries no clinical consequences, but it can certainly lead to disappointment if you’ve already picked a name and painted a nursery.

NIPT Blood Screening: 10 Weeks

Non-invasive prenatal testing uses the same basic principle as consumer tests (analyzing fetal DNA in your blood) but is ordered through your healthcare provider and screens for chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome at the same time. Sex determination is over 99% accurate, and the test is validated from 10 weeks onward.

NIPT does occasionally fail to return results. The most common reason is that the fraction of fetal DNA in your blood is too low for reliable analysis. A large study of over 153,000 pregnancies found that about 80% of test failures were caused by this issue. Several factors can lower your fetal DNA fraction:

  • Higher BMI: Increased blood volume dilutes the fetal DNA, making it harder to detect. Fetal fraction consistently drops as maternal BMI rises.
  • Earlier gestational age: The closer you are to 10 weeks, the less fetal DNA is circulating.
  • Older maternal age: Fetal fraction tends to decrease slightly with age.
  • Certain pregnancy complications: Conditions like pre-eclampsia increase the amount of the mother’s own DNA in the blood, further diluting the fetal portion.

If your first NIPT draw comes back inconclusive, your provider will typically recommend repeating the test a week or two later, when fetal DNA levels have risen.

Ultrasound: 12 to 14 Weeks (With Caveats)

Ultrasound is the most familiar method, and it’s the one used at routine anatomy scans. But timing matters enormously for accuracy. External genitalia only begin forming around week 11, so imaging before that point is essentially guesswork.

At 11 weeks, ultrasound sex predictions are wrong more often than they’re right. One study found that 56% of male fetuses were incorrectly reported as female at that stage. By 12 weeks, accuracy climbs to roughly 75%, and by 14 weeks it reaches about 90%. After 14 weeks, accuracy in the same study hit 100%. The standard anatomy scan at 18 to 20 weeks is nearly perfect, with accuracy rates above 99% for both sexes in research covering pregnancies from 16 to 40 weeks.

Some sonographers use what’s informally called “nub theory” to make earlier predictions. Before 14 weeks, all fetuses have a small protrusion called the genital tubercle between the legs. This structure eventually develops into either a penis or a clitoris. If the nub angles upward more than 30 degrees from the spine, it suggests a male. If it sits roughly parallel to the spine, it suggests a female. In the hands of trained professionals, this approach has shown accuracy rates of 96 to 99% at 12 weeks and 100% by 13 to 14 weeks in several studies. However, the quality of the image and the baby’s position both matter. A sonographer who can’t get a clear view will simply tell you to come back later.

CVS and Amniocentesis: 10 to 16 Weeks

Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and amniocentesis are diagnostic procedures that analyze fetal chromosomes directly, making them about 99% accurate for sex determination. CVS can be performed between 10 and 13 weeks, while amniocentesis is typically done around 16 weeks.

These tests aren’t offered just to find out a baby’s sex. They’re reserved for pregnancies with a higher risk of chromosomal or genetic conditions, because both procedures carry a small risk of complications including miscarriage. If you’re already having one of these tests for medical reasons, sex determination comes as part of the results.

Methods That Don’t Work

The Ramzi theory, which claims to predict sex based on placenta placement as early as 6 weeks, has no scientific support. The idea originated from a single paper and has never been confirmed by peer-reviewed research. OB-GYN Sherry Ross has noted that the theory “may not have any real scientific validity.” Other folk methods like the ring test, baking soda test, or predictions based on heart rate or belly shape have no diagnostic value.

Which Option Makes Sense for You

Your timeline depends on what’s available and what you’re comfortable with. If knowing as early as possible is important to you and you’re willing to pay out of pocket, a consumer DNA test at 6 weeks is the fastest route. If you’d rather get the information through your medical care, NIPT at 10 weeks combines sex determination with valuable health screening. And if you prefer to simply wait for a scan, the anatomy ultrasound around 18 to 20 weeks remains the most common way parents find out, with near-perfect accuracy and no additional cost beyond your routine prenatal visits.

One practical note: if you want the sex to be a surprise at delivery, let your provider know before any blood draw or ultrasound. NIPT results and anatomy scan reports both include sex by default, and it’s easy to accidentally see the information on a lab portal or printed report.
