Tracking and Eye Coordination

The biggest visual milestone at 3 months is that your baby’s eyes should be working together to focus on and follow objects. Before this point, it’s common for a newborn’s eyes to wander or cross occasionally because the muscles controlling eye movement are still developing. They match what a baby’s developing eyes can actually pick up on. At 3 months, a bright red ball is far more visually interesting to your baby than a pastel pink one.

Three months is just the beginning of a rapid stretch of visual development. Here’s a rough timeline of what comes next:

Ways to Support Visual Development

You don’t need special equipment. The most effective visual stimulus for a 3-month-old is your face. Babies are hardwired to look at faces, and spending time close to your baby while making expressions gives their visual system exactly the kind of complex, high-contrast input it needs to develop.

Beyond face time, a few simple strategies help. Hold brightly colored toys about 10 to 15 inches from your baby’s face and move them slowly side to side to encourage tracking. Change your baby’s position regularly so they see the room from different angles. When you’re out of reach, position yourself where your baby can still see you, even if your features are blurry at that distance, your movement and voice together help the brain learn to connect visual and auditory information.

Avoid overstimulation. A cluttered visual field with too many competing patterns can be overwhelming. One or two bold objects at a time are more useful than a wall of flashing toys.

Signs of a Vision Problem

Some visual quirks are completely normal at 3 months. Occasional eye crossing, for instance, is common in the first few weeks but should be fading by this age. A few things are worth flagging to your pediatrician if you notice them at or after the 3-month mark:
