The process of actually “catching” the cold, meaning the virus latching onto cells and beginning to replicate, happens even faster than that. Once the virus reaches the cells lining your nose and throat, it gets to work quickly. Lab research on rhinovirus replication shows that viral RNA levels inside infected cells peak around 12 hours after infection. By 24 hours, newly made virus particles are being released from those cells, ready to spread deeper into surrounding tissue. This is why some people feel a scratchy throat the same evening they were exposed: the virus is already replicating before you have any idea you’ve been infected.

The common cold has one of the shortest incubation periods of the major respiratory infections. Flu symptoms typically appear one to four days after infection, putting it in a similar range. COVID-19 takes longer, with symptoms generally appearing two to five days after exposure and sometimes as late as 14 days. So if you were around a sick person yesterday and you’re already sneezing today, a cold is the most likely explanation. A flu could also come on that fast, but COVID-19 would be less likely to show up within 24 hours.

What Actually Determines How Fast You Get Sick

Several factors influence whether you catch a cold quickly, slowly, or not at all. The size of the viral dose matters: a prolonged face-to-face conversation with someone who’s actively sneezing delivers far more virus than briefly touching a doorknob they used an hour ago. Your immune history with that specific strain of rhinovirus also plays a role, since there are over 100 different types and prior exposure to one builds some resistance to it specifically.

Sleep, stress, and the condition of your nasal lining all influence how effectively your body mounts an early defense. People who are sleep-deprived or under chronic stress tend to be more susceptible. Dry nasal passages, common in winter or air-conditioned environments, are less effective at catching and clearing viral particles before they reach cells.
