Genital warts typically appear 2 to 3 months after exposure to HPV, though the range spans anywhere from 1 to 20 months. Once visible, individual warts usually grow slowly over weeks, but clusters can spread to nearby skin more quickly depending on your immune health and other factors.
From Infection to First Visible Wart
HPV infects the deepest layer of skin cells, where it keeps a low profile, maintaining only 50 to 100 copies of its DNA per cell. During this quiet phase, you won’t see or feel anything. The virus hijacks normal cell growth controls, forcing skin cells to keep dividing instead of maturing and shedding as they normally would. This excess cell production is what eventually builds into a wart.
The lag between infection and a visible bump depends partly on how much virus was transmitted. Multifocal infections, where the virus lands in several spots at once, tend to produce visible warts faster than a single-site exposure. For most people, the first wart surfaces around the 2- to 3-month mark, but some carry a subclinical infection for well over a year before anything appears. Others never develop visible warts at all, because their immune system suppresses the virus before it causes noticeable growth.
How Quickly Individual Warts Grow
Once a wart becomes visible, it generally grows slowly. Most genital warts start as small, flesh-colored or slightly darker bumps, sometimes no larger than a pinhead. Over weeks, they may reach a few millimeters in diameter. Some stay small and flat. Others develop a rough, slightly raised texture or a cauliflower-like surface.
The more concerning pattern for most people isn’t how large a single wart gets, but how quickly new ones appear nearby. HPV sheds virus particles from infected skin, and those particles can seed adjacent tissue. A person might notice one small bump and then, over the course of several weeks, find a small cluster. In rare cases, particularly in people with severely compromised immune systems, warts can merge into large masses. These so-called giant condylomas grow slowly but can become quite extensive if left untreated.
What Speeds Up Growth
Your immune system is the single biggest factor controlling how fast warts grow and spread. When the immune response is weakened, the virus replicates more freely and warts can appear faster, grow larger, and multiply in number. Several conditions are known to tip the balance in the virus’s favor.
Immunosuppression: Conditions like HIV/AIDS, cancer, or medications taken after organ transplants all reduce the body’s ability to fight HPV. People in these situations often develop more warts, in more locations, in a shorter time frame.
Pregnancy: Genital warts tend to grow faster during pregnancy. Hormonal shifts, changes in vaginal discharge, and a naturally suppressed immune system (the body dials down immune activity to protect the fetus) all create conditions that favor wart growth. Warts that were small or stable before pregnancy can enlarge noticeably.
Smoking: Tobacco damages the local immune defenses in skin and mucous membranes. Cigarette byproducts reduce the number of immune cells that patrol the skin surface and decrease natural killer cell activity. The result is that the body clears HPV more slowly, and infections persist longer. Smoking has also been shown to accelerate HPV’s life cycle, giving the virus a direct growth advantage.
Treatment Timelines
Most treatment courses for genital warts run 12 to 16 weeks before clearance is assessed. Whether you’re using a prescription cream at home or having warts frozen or removed in a clinic, the timeline is roughly similar. Some warts respond within a few weeks, shrinking visibly. Others take the full treatment course to disappear. Your provider will typically check progress every one to two weeks early on, then shift to biweekly visits.
The frustrating reality is that treatment removes the wart but not the underlying virus. All available treatments are effective at eliminating a high proportion of visible warts, yet none reliably clears the HPV strain causing them. This means recurrence is common.
How Often Warts Come Back
About 44% of people experience a recurrence after their first episode of genital warts. Recurrence means warts reappear at the same site, caused by the same HPV strain. For some people this happens once. For others, the pattern repeats: one study tracking patients over a median of about four years documented as many as 10 recurrent episodes in some individuals.
Recurrent warts can appear within weeks of successful treatment or months later. The first several months after clearance carry the highest risk, which is why follow-up visits are usually scheduled at one, three, and six months. Over time, the immune system does gain better control of the virus for most people, and episodes tend to become less frequent. But the timeline varies enormously. Some people are completely done within a year, while others deal with sporadic recurrences for several years.
When Growth Patterns Should Concern You
Slow, gradual growth of small bumps is the typical pattern and, while annoying, isn’t a sign of anything beyond a standard HPV infection. Patterns worth paying closer attention to include rapid spread of new warts over days rather than weeks, warts that bleed or ulcerate, or warts that keep growing despite treatment. These situations can signal a weakened immune system or, very rarely, a more aggressive process that needs evaluation.
If warts seem to be growing or multiplying unusually fast, it’s worth considering whether any of the accelerating factors apply to you: a new medication that suppresses immunity, an undiagnosed condition, pregnancy, or heavy smoking. Addressing those factors, when possible, can meaningfully slow wart growth and improve treatment outcomes.
