Hummingbirds are defined by perpetual high activity, which necessitates an astonishingly quick growth timeline. A hatchling becomes a fully functional adult in mere weeks. The mother is the sole caretaker, diligently sitting on the nest to maintain warmth. When the eggs hatch, the young are altricial—completely helpless and underdeveloped. Reaching Independence
Fledging marks the moment the young hummingbird leaves the nest, but it does not signify immediate independence. The first flights are usually short and characterized by clumsiness as the bird coordinates its newly developed wing muscles. Young birds often perch on nearby branches, practicing hovering and maneuvering techniques.
This post-fledging period is a transition phase where the mother continues supplemental feeding for up to one or two weeks. She locates the fledglings and feeds them by inserting her bill directly into their throat. During this time, the young birds learn vital survival skills, such as foraging for insects and locating nectar sources. Once they master these behaviors, they become fully autonomous and disperse from the nesting territory.

This requires a massive caloric intake to sustain both the mother and her rapidly growing offspring.
