How Fast Should Your Heart Beat? Rates by Age

A normal resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). That’s measured while you’re awake, calm, and sitting still. Where you land within that range depends on your fitness level, age, medications, and a handful of other variables. Highly fit athletes can have resting rates as low as 40 bpm and be perfectly healthy.

What Counts as Normal by Age

Heart rate ranges shift dramatically from birth through adulthood. Newborns and infants have the fastest hearts, and the rate gradually slows as children grow.

  • Newborn to 3 months: 85 to 205 bpm while awake, 80 to 160 bpm while sleeping
  • 3 months to 2 years: 100 to 190 bpm while awake, 75 to 160 bpm while sleeping
  • 2 to 10 years: 60 to 140 bpm while awake, 60 to 90 bpm while sleeping
  • Over 10 years and adults: 60 to 100 bpm while awake, 50 to 90 bpm while sleeping

Children’s hearts are smaller and need to pump faster to circulate the same volume of blood relative to their body size. By the time a child reaches about 10, their resting range starts to look like an adult’s.

When a Heart Rate Is Too Fast or Too Slow

Clinically, a resting heart rate above 100 bpm is called tachycardia, and one below 60 bpm is called bradycardia. But crossing those thresholds doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong. A fit person sitting at 55 bpm is likely just well-conditioned. A nervous person clocking 105 bpm in a doctor’s office may simply be anxious.

Context matters more than the number alone. A resting rate consistently above 100 when you’re calm, or one below 60 paired with dizziness, fatigue, or fainting, is worth paying attention to. Sudden jumps above 120 bpm at rest can signal an abnormal heart rhythm rather than ordinary stress or exertion.

What Changes Your Heart Rate Day to Day

Your heart rate isn’t a fixed number. It shifts throughout the day based on what you’re doing, feeling, and consuming. Some of the most common influences:

Caffeine. Drinking caffeinated beverages five or more days a week at doses around 400 mg daily (roughly four cups of coffee) has been shown to raise heart rate and blood pressure over time. People who consume more than 600 mg daily tend to have elevated heart rates that stay high even after resting for several minutes following physical activity.

Emotions and stress. Anxiety, excitement, anger, and fear all trigger your body’s fight-or-flight response, which speeds the heart up. This is normal in the short term.

Fitness level. Regular aerobic exercise strengthens the heart muscle so it pumps more blood per beat. Over time, this means your heart doesn’t need to beat as often to keep up, which is why endurance athletes can have resting rates near 40 bpm without any problems.

Other factors. Smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, certain medications (like beta-blockers or stimulants), body position, sleep quality, and even air temperature all play a role. Standing up quickly can spike your rate by 10 to 20 bpm before it settles back down.

How to Check Your Own Heart Rate

Sit down and rest quietly for a few minutes before measuring. You want your body as close to a true resting state as possible.

The easiest spot is your wrist. Turn one hand palm-up and place the tips of your index and middle fingers on the inside of the opposite wrist, just below the base of your thumb, between the bone and the tendon. Press lightly until you feel the pulse. Don’t push hard, because too much pressure can actually block the blood flow and make the pulse disappear.

You can also check at your neck by placing those same two fingertips in the groove alongside your windpipe. Again, press gently.

Once you feel a steady beat, count for a full 60 seconds. If you’re in a hurry, count for 15 seconds and multiply by four, but the full minute gives you a more accurate reading, especially if your rhythm feels slightly irregular. Most smartwatches and fitness trackers measure heart rate continuously, which is useful for spotting trends over days and weeks.

Heart Rate During Exercise

Your heart rate climbs during physical activity, and how high it goes depends on how intense the workout is. The American Heart Association breaks it into two zones based on your estimated maximum heart rate:

  • Moderate intensity: 50% to 70% of your maximum heart rate. Think brisk walking, casual cycling, or light swimming.
  • Vigorous intensity: 70% to 85% of your maximum. This is running, fast cycling, or high-intensity interval training.

Estimating Your Maximum Heart Rate

The most commonly used formula is simple: 220 minus your age. So if you’re 35, your estimated max is 185 bpm, and your moderate-intensity zone would be roughly 93 to 130 bpm.

That formula has been around for decades and works as a rough guide, but it’s not precise for everyone. Research comparing several prediction formulas found that all of them have a margin of error of about 18 to 24 bpm in either direction for any given individual. Some newer equations, like the Tanaka formula (208 minus 0.7 times your age), tend to be slightly more accurate on average, but no formula perfectly predicts what your specific heart can do. If you want your true maximum, the only reliable way to find it is a supervised exercise stress test.

For most people using heart rate to guide workouts, the 220-minus-age estimate is close enough to be useful. Just don’t treat it as an exact ceiling.

What Your Resting Heart Rate Tells You Over Time

A single reading is a snapshot. The real value comes from tracking your resting heart rate over weeks and months. If you start a new exercise routine, you may notice your resting rate gradually drop by 5 to 10 bpm as your cardiovascular fitness improves. That’s one of the clearest signs your heart is getting more efficient.

On the flip side, a resting heart rate that creeps upward without an obvious explanation (like increased caffeine, new medication, or a period of high stress) can be an early signal that something has changed. Infections, dehydration, thyroid imbalances, and anemia can all push resting heart rate higher. If your rate is consistently outside the 60 to 100 range, or if you notice a sustained shift of 10 or more bpm from your usual baseline, that’s useful information to share with a healthcare provider.
