Glasses should rest gently behind your ears without pressing into the skin or bone. The temple tips (the curved ends of the arms) should follow the natural contour of the area behind your ear, touching lightly but never squeezing. When the fit is right, you barely notice them. When it’s wrong, you get headaches, soreness, red marks, or glasses that won’t stay put.
Where the Temple Tips Should Sit
The bend in the temple tip, the point where it curves downward, should start just past the spot where the arm makes its last contact with the top of your ear. From there, the tip follows the shape of the bone behind your ear (a bony bump called the mastoid process) without pushing against it. Think of the temple resting along that bone the way a piece of clothing drapes over your shoulder: it touches, but it doesn’t dig in.
The end of the temple tip should land about halfway to two-thirds of the way down the length of your ear. If the tip ends above that point, the temples are too short for your head and won’t grip properly. If they extend well past your ear and curl under it, they’re likely too long and will feel bulky or catch on hair.
There should be no pressure on the soft tissue directly behind the ear. That area is packed with sensitive nerves, including branches that run along the back and base of the ear. Pressing a hard temple tip into this zone is a reliable way to trigger headaches, tenderness, or a dull ache that radiates across the side of your head.
The Right Angle for the Bend
When you look at your glasses from the side, the temple tips should angle downward at roughly 45 degrees as they curve behind your ears. If the tips are nearly horizontal, they have nothing to hook onto and your glasses will slide forward on your nose throughout the day. If the bend is too sharp, the tips will pinch the back of your ear, ride upward, and create pressure points that become painful within minutes.
A proper 45-degree bend distributes weight between the nose pads (or bridge) and the ears, so neither point bears too much of the load. That balance is what makes glasses feel “invisible” when the fit is dialed in.
How Temple Length Affects Fit
Temple arms typically range from 120 mm to 150 mm, with the most common lengths being 135, 140, 145, and 150 mm. You can find your frame’s temple length printed on the inside of the arm, usually as the third number in a sequence like 52-18-140. That last number is the temple length in millimeters, measured from the hinge screw to the tip.
If your temples are too short, the bend will land on top of your ear rather than behind it, pulling the frames tight against your head. If they’re too long, the bend starts too far back, leaving the arms loose and the glasses prone to sliding. When shopping for new frames, matching your temple length to within 5 mm of a pair that already fits you well is a good starting point.
Signs Your Fit Is Off
A few common symptoms point directly to a behind-the-ear problem:
- Headaches after wearing glasses for an hour or more. Too-tight temples compress nerves clustered around the bone behind your ear. Multiple nerves converge in this small area, so even slight pressure can produce a surprising amount of pain.
- Red indentations or sore spots. If you take off your glasses and see marks behind your ears, the tips are applying too much force. Over time, chronic friction and pressure at this contact point can cause a skin condition where a firm, raised nodule develops on the irritated area. This is uncommon but directly linked to poorly fitted or heavy frames.
- Glasses sliding down your nose. This often isn’t a nose pad issue at all. If the temple tips don’t curve enough behind the ears, gravity pulls the frames forward with nothing to anchor them.
- One side sitting higher than the other. Uneven temple bends make the frame tilt on your face. Opticians check this by placing the frame flat on a surface and comparing the right and left sides to make sure the temples sit at the same height and angle.
Adjusting the Fit at Home
Minor adjustments are manageable at home if you’re careful. The approach depends on your frame material.
Plastic and Acetate Frames
Plastic temples become pliable with moderate heat. Run the temple tip under warm (not boiling) water for 30 to 60 seconds, or use a hair dryer on low heat. Once the plastic softens, gently bend the tip inward to tighten the fit or outward to loosen it. Hold the new shape for about 15 seconds while the plastic cools. Make small changes, try them on, and repeat. Overcorrecting is the most common mistake.
Metal Frames
Metal temples can be bent by hand, but they require more caution. Warm the area you plan to adjust with a hair dryer for 20 to 30 seconds first, especially if the metal feels stiff. Apply pressure only at the temple tip, never near the hinge or the lens edges. Titanium and other high-strength alloys can snap if you force them, so work slowly. If the metal resists, stop and take them to an optician rather than risking a break.
What to Adjust
If your glasses slide forward, increase the downward curve of the temple tips slightly. If they pinch behind the ears, open up the curve so it’s gentler. If the frames sit crooked, compare both temple tips side by side. Often one has been bent out of shape from taking glasses off with one hand, and simply matching it to the other side fixes the problem.
When a Professional Adjustment Is Worth It
Opticians have heated pliers, frame warmers, and measurement tools that make precise adjustments much easier. Most optical shops will adjust frames for free, even if you didn’t buy them there. It’s worth the trip if you’ve tried home adjustments and still feel pressure, if your frames are expensive or made from a material you’re unsure about, or if one side consistently feels different from the other despite your best efforts. A proper fitting takes about five minutes and can eliminate discomfort you may have been tolerating for months.
