LPN school is genuinely challenging, but it’s a concentrated kind of difficult rather than an overwhelming one. Most programs run 12 to 18 months, packing a significant amount of nursing science, clinical skills, and pharmacology into a compressed timeline. The intensity comes less from any single subject being impossibly hard and more from the pace: you’re learning college-level biology, medication math, and hands-on patient care simultaneously, with little downtime between units.
What the Coursework Looks Like
LPN programs (sometimes called practical nursing or PN programs) are structured around three core nursing courses that build on each other, typically worth 9 to 11 credit hours each. These aren’t survey courses. Each one blends lecture content with lab practice and clinical rotations, so a single course might cover disease processes, medication administration, and patient assessment all in one semester.
On top of the nursing-specific courses, you’ll take general education requirements in biology, nutrition, psychology, and math. Anatomy and physiology is the science course that trips up the most students. It demands heavy memorization of body systems, and the material shows up again and again in your nursing courses. If you struggle with A&P, everything downstream gets harder.
How Many Hours You’ll Spend Each Week
The standard expectation in college-level programs is three hours of study and preparation for every credit hour you’re enrolled in. LPN students typically carry a heavy course load, and when you factor in lectures, labs, clinical shifts, and independent study time, the commitment adds up fast. Laramie County Community College, for example, tells its nursing students to expect roughly 10 hours a day, seven days a week, between class time and studying.
That number sounds extreme, and for some weeks it is. Clinical rotations in particular eat up full days. You might spend 8 to 12 hours at a healthcare facility, then come home and still need to complete care plans, study for exams, or practice dosage calculations. The students who are caught off guard by LPN school usually underestimate this time commitment, not the intellectual difficulty of the material itself.
The Hardest Part: Pharmacology and Drug Calculations
If you ask LPN students what nearly broke them, most will say pharmacology. You’re expected to learn drug classifications, side effects, interactions, and contraindications for dozens of medications. It’s a lot of pure memorization, and the stakes feel high because medication errors in real nursing practice can harm patients.
Drug dosage math is the other major stumbling block. Basic dose calculations are manageable for most students. In one large study of nursing students’ math performance, about 89% got straightforward dosage problems correct. But accuracy collapsed on more complex problems: only about 3% of students correctly solved calculations involving maximum concentration and minimum dilution. The most common errors were unit conversions (milligrams to micrograms, for instance), failing to pull the right numbers from a word problem, and forgetting to include units in the final answer. These aren’t advanced math concepts, but they require careful, methodical thinking under pressure, which is a skill that takes practice to build.
How Many Students Don’t Make It
Attrition in nursing programs is real, and it’s one of the clearest signals that these programs are demanding. While specific LPN dropout rates vary by school, research on practical nursing and diploma-level programs consistently shows that 17% to 30% of students leave before finishing. One Canadian study of 432 diploma nursing students found that about 20% formally withdrew and another 10% simply stopped showing up. In an Australian program, a third of accelerated students dropped out of their science courses and left entirely, compared to less than 3% of students in the traditional track.
The reasons students leave are a mix of academic struggle, financial stress, and burnout from the schedule. Programs that compress content into a shorter timeline tend to see higher dropout rates, and since LPN programs are already compressed by design, the pace alone filters out students who aren’t prepared for it.
Getting In Is Its Own Hurdle
Before you even start, most LPN programs require an entrance exam. The TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) is the most common one. Minimum qualifying scores vary by school, but a typical benchmark looks something like a composite score above 48%, with individual minimums in English (50%), reading (55%), math (45%), and science (35%). These are floor scores, not targets. Competitive programs admit students with scores well above the minimums, so if you’re borderline, you may need to retake the exam or complete prerequisite coursework first.
Some programs also require a minimum GPA, prerequisite courses in biology or math, a background check, and current CPR certification. The application process alone can take several months when you factor in exam prep, transcript requests, and waitlists at popular schools.
The Licensing Exam at the End
Finishing the program is only part of the challenge. To actually work as an LPN, you need to pass the NCLEX-PN, a computerized adaptive exam that adjusts its difficulty based on your answers. The test covers nursing fundamentals, pharmacology, safety, and clinical judgment. The 2026 version of the test plan places increased emphasis on clinical judgment, meaning you won’t just be tested on facts but on your ability to prioritize, interpret patient data, and make decisions.
The NCLEX-PN has a variable length, ending when the algorithm determines with enough confidence whether you’ve passed or failed. First-time pass rates hover around 80% to 85% nationally in most years, which means roughly one in six graduates doesn’t pass on the first attempt. Failing isn’t the end of the road (you can retake it after a waiting period), but it does add stress and delay your ability to start working.
How It Compares to RN Programs
LPN school is shorter and narrower in scope than an associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing. You won’t go as deep into pathophysiology, research methods, or leadership topics. But “shorter” doesn’t mean “easier.” The compressed format means you cover foundational nursing content at a faster pace, with less time to recover from a bad exam or catch up on material you didn’t absorb the first time. Many students who later bridge from LPN to RN say the LPN program felt more intense week to week, even though the RN curriculum was broader and more academically complex overall.
What Actually Helps You Succeed
Students who do well in LPN school tend to share a few habits. They study in short, consistent blocks rather than cramming before exams. They form study groups early, because explaining a concept to someone else is one of the fastest ways to find gaps in your own understanding. They practice dosage calculations daily, treating it like a skill (which it is) rather than a topic you review once.
If you can, take anatomy and physiology before your program starts rather than during it. Completing even one prerequisite ahead of time frees up hours each week that you’ll desperately want once clinicals begin. And be honest with yourself about your schedule: if you’re working full time, caring for children, or managing other obligations, a part-time or evening LPN program (where available) may be more realistic than a full-time daytime track, even if it takes a few extra months.
LPN school is hard in the way that learning any skilled trade is hard. The content is learnable, the math is manageable, and the clinical skills become second nature with repetition. What makes it difficult is the volume of material, the speed of the program, and the fact that you can’t coast through any single week without falling behind.
