Ambient temperatures above 100°F (38°C) are considered too hot for cats. While cats handle warm weather better than you might expect, their cooling systems are limited, and heat becomes dangerous faster than most owners realize. A cat’s normal body temperature already runs between 100.5°F and 102.5°F, so it doesn’t take much environmental heat to push them into overheating territory.
How Cats Handle Heat
Cats don’t sweat the way humans do. Their only sweat glands are on their paw pads, which provide minimal cooling for an entire body. Instead, cats rely on licking their paws and chest, using saliva evaporation to bring their temperature down. They’ll also seek out cool surfaces like tile floors, move to shaded areas, and reduce their activity level during the hottest parts of the day.
These strategies work reasonably well in moderate heat. But once the air temperature climbs past 100°F, evaporative cooling from saliva and paw pads simply can’t keep up. If you see your cat panting, that’s a red flag. Unlike dogs, cats rarely pant under normal circumstances. A panting cat is almost always a cat in distress, whether from heat, heart disease, or another medical issue. In an air-conditioned home, panting should prompt an immediate call to your vet.
Humidity Makes It Worse
Temperature alone doesn’t tell the whole story. High humidity prevents moisture from evaporating off your cat’s paw pads and saliva-dampened fur, which cripples the one real cooling mechanism they have. Heat precautions should start as soon as the heat index (the combination of temperature and humidity) reaches 90°F. A dry 95°F day is dangerous, but a humid 90°F day can be just as bad or worse.
Cats at Higher Risk
Some cats overheat at temperatures that other cats tolerate without issue. Flat-faced breeds like Persians, Himalayans, and Exotic Shorthairs are especially vulnerable. Their shortened nasal passages have less surface area for evaporative cooling, and structural narrowing of the airways can partially block airflow, making panting far less effective at releasing heat.
Overweight cats face a similar disadvantage. Excess body fat acts as insulation and physically limits the body’s ability to dilate blood vessels near the skin surface, which is one of the ways mammals dump heat. Cats with heart disease are also at elevated risk because their cardiovascular system can’t efficiently shuttle warm blood from the core to the skin for cooling. Senior cats, very young kittens, and cats with kidney disease or respiratory conditions round out the high-risk group.
Signs of Overheating
Early signs are easy to miss if you’re not looking for them. Watch for restlessness, agitation, or pacing, especially if your cat is actively seeking out water or shade. Drooling, red gums or tongue, and a noticeably fast heart rate are all early warning signals. Some cats will vomit or have diarrhea as their body struggles to cope.
If heat exposure continues, the signs escalate quickly. Lethargy, confusion, weakness, and collapse indicate the cat is moving into heatstroke. Seizures can follow. Once a cat’s internal temperature exceeds 106°F (41.1°C), the risk of permanent damage rises sharply: brain swelling, bone marrow suppression, and blood clotting disorders can all develop at that threshold. Heatstroke can be fatal without emergency treatment.
Hot Surfaces Are a Hidden Danger
Even when the air temperature feels manageable, the ground can be scorching. Asphalt absorbs and radiates heat far beyond what the thermometer reads. When the air is just 77°F, pavement can reach 125°F, hot enough to damage skin in 60 seconds. At an air temperature of 87°F, asphalt hits 143°F, and burns can happen in under five seconds. On days above 95°F, pavement temperatures soar past 150°F.
Outdoor cats and cats who spend time on patios, balconies, or near sun-baked concrete are most at risk for paw pad burns. If you can’t comfortably hold the back of your hand against the surface for seven seconds, it’s too hot for your cat to walk on.
What to Do if Your Cat Overheats
Move the cat to a cool, shaded area immediately. Offer fresh water but don’t force it. Apply cool (not cold) water to their fur, focusing on the paw pads, belly, and inner thighs where blood vessels sit close to the surface. You can place damp towels on these areas or use a fan to encourage evaporation. Avoid ice or ice-cold water. Rapid, extreme cooling constricts blood vessels near the skin and actually traps heat in the core, making things worse.
Even if your cat seems to recover after cooling down, heatstroke can cause internal damage that isn’t immediately visible. Organ injury, particularly to the kidneys and brain, can develop in the hours following a heat event. Any cat that showed signs of moderate to severe overheating needs veterinary evaluation, ideally the same day.
Keeping Indoor Temperatures Safe
If your home has air conditioning, keeping it set at or below 80°F will keep most healthy cats comfortable. Cats left in homes without air conditioning during a heat wave are at real risk, especially in upper-floor apartments where heat accumulates. Make sure your cat always has access to fresh water, shaded resting spots, and rooms with airflow. A ceiling fan or box fan won’t cool a cat directly the way it cools human sweat, but it does help move air across damp fur after grooming.
Cars are the most dangerous enclosed space. Interior temperatures in a parked car can exceed 120°F within minutes on a warm day, even with windows cracked. Never leave a cat in a parked vehicle, even briefly.
