What is well established is that dehydration commonly causes headaches, fatigue, and irritability, all of which make it harder to concentrate even if your raw cognitive ability isn’t technically impaired. If you notice a midafternoon slump or a dull headache creeping in, a glass of water is worth trying before reaching for caffeine.

Drinking excessive water in a short window can be genuinely dangerous. Water intoxication occurs when you take in so much fluid that it dilutes the sodium in your blood, a condition called hyponatremia. When sodium levels drop, water rushes into your cells and causes them to swell. In the brain, this swelling has nowhere to go, which is why severe cases can lead to seizures, coma, or death.

Symptoms of overhydration start with nausea, bloating, and headache, then progress to confusion, muscle weakness, and cramping. If plain water bores you, adding sliced citrus, cucumber, or fresh mint can make it more appealing without adding sugar or calories.

Drinking a glass of water before each meal serves double duty. It helps you stay hydrated and may reduce how much you eat, since thirst is frequently mistaken for hunger. Eating water-rich foods at meals, like salads, soups, and fresh fruit, adds to your intake without requiring you to think about it. The goal isn’t perfection or obsessive tracking.
