Head lice spread almost exclusively through direct head-to-head contact with someone who already has them. They crawl from one person’s hair to another’s when heads touch, using specialized claws to grip individual strands. They cannot jump, hop, or fly, which means casual proximity to an infested person, like sitting nearby in a classroom, is not enough for transmission.
Why Direct Contact Is the Main Route
Head lice have six legs, each ending in a curved claw designed to clamp onto a single hair shaft. These claws are shaped specifically for human hair, and lice use them to move hand-over-hand along strands at a surprisingly quick crawl. When two heads touch, even briefly, a louse can transfer from one person’s hair to the other’s in seconds. Research on lice movement patterns confirms they are far less likely to take advantage of indirect transmission scenarios and rely primarily on this head-to-head route.
This is why infestations are most common among children between ages 3 and 11. Kids play in close contact, share pillows at sleepovers, huddle over tablets, and lean their heads together constantly. The social behaviors of childhood create exactly the conditions lice need to spread. Adults who get lice most often catch them from their own children during close contact like reading together, cuddling, or co-sleeping.
Can You Get Lice From Hats, Brushes, or Furniture?
Picking up lice from shared personal items is possible but rare. A louse that falls off someone’s head onto a hat, hairbrush, headband, or pillow could theoretically crawl onto another person’s head if they use that item soon after. But lice are poorly adapted for life off the scalp. They need human blood every few hours to survive and depend on the warmth and humidity near the skin to stay alive. Without a host, they die relatively quickly.
The Michigan Department of Health categorizes indirect contact through shared bedding, combs, brushes, scarves, hair ornaments, or hats as a real but uncommon transmission route. The vast majority of infestations come from direct contact. Still, during an active infestation, avoiding shared hair accessories and headwear is a reasonable precaution.
Lice Don’t Spread Through Water or Pets
Swimming pools are not a meaningful risk. Lice survive submersion by gripping hair tightly and essentially shutting down, and the CDC notes they are unlikely to let go of a person’s head while underwater. Chlorine at standard pool concentrations does not kill them either. The real risk at a pool would be the same as anywhere else: heads touching during play.
Pets are completely off the hook. Head lice are strictly host-specific, meaning the species that infests humans (Pediculus humanus capitis) can only survive on human scalps and human blood. A louse that landed on a dog or cat would die quickly because the animal’s fur, skin temperature, and blood are incompatible. You cannot catch lice from a pet, and your pet cannot catch them from you.
What Happens Once Lice Reach Your Hair
A single adult female is enough to start an infestation. Once on your scalp, she begins feeding on small amounts of blood several times a day and laying eggs within a day or two of mating. She produces roughly six to ten eggs per day, cementing each one to an individual hair strand close to the scalp where the warmth is ideal for development.
The glue she uses is remarkably effective. It’s a waterproof, protein-based cement produced by glands in her body, composed mainly of amino acid compounds and fatty acids. This substance hardens into a rigid sheath around the base of the egg (called a nit), bonding it so firmly to the hair that it cannot be washed off with regular shampooing or blown away. This is why nit combs with very fine teeth are necessary to physically slide the eggs off the hair shaft.
Eggs hatch in about 8 to 9 days. The newly hatched nymphs are tiny, nearly translucent, and immediately begin feeding. They mature into adults capable of reproducing within another 9 to 12 days. This means a single louse that crawled onto your head can produce a noticeable infestation within two to three weeks if untreated.
Who Is Most at Risk
Lice do not discriminate based on hygiene. Clean hair and dirty hair are equally hospitable. What matters is proximity to someone who has them. Elementary school children are the highest-risk group simply because of how they interact physically. Girls tend to get lice more frequently than boys, likely because of play styles that involve more head-to-head contact and hair-to-hair touching rather than any biological difference.
Household members of an infested child are next in line. If one child in a family has lice, checking everyone in the home makes sense. Lice spread easily during the close contact that happens naturally in families, especially at bedtime when heads share pillows or rest against the same couch cushions.
How to Reduce Your Risk
Since head-to-head contact drives nearly all transmission, the most effective prevention is reducing direct hair contact with someone who has an active infestation. For children, that’s easier said than done, but a few practical steps help:
- Tie long hair back. Braids, buns, and ponytails reduce the amount of loose hair available for a louse to grab onto during incidental contact.
- Avoid sharing hair tools. Brushes, combs, hair ties, and headbands are low-risk but not zero-risk items during an outbreak.
- Check heads regularly. During a known outbreak at school or camp, combing through your child’s hair with a fine-toothed nit comb every few days catches an infestation early, before it spreads to the rest of the household.
- Separate storage for hats and coats. When schools are dealing with outbreaks, keeping children’s hats and scarves in their own bags rather than a shared hook or bin removes one minor transmission opportunity.
Early detection is the most practical defense. A single louse is far easier to deal with than dozens of adults and hundreds of cemented eggs, and catching an infestation in the first week can prevent it from spreading to siblings, classmates, and parents.
