How Long Adderall Shows Up on a Urine Drug Test

Adderall is typically detectable in urine for 1 to 7 days after your last dose. For most people taking a prescribed dose once, it clears within about 2 to 3 days. Regular or higher-dose use pushes that window closer to the full week. The wide range comes down to individual biology and, surprisingly, something as simple as how acidic your urine is.

Why the Detection Window Varies So Much

Adderall contains two forms of amphetamine. The d-amphetamine component has an average half-life of about 10 hours in adults, while l-amphetamine lingers a bit longer at around 13 hours. A drug generally takes about 5.5 half-lives to leave your system entirely, which puts the baseline clearance time at roughly 55 to 72 hours (2 to 3 days) for a single dose.

But “cleared from your system” and “undetectable on a drug test” aren’t the same thing. Your kidneys excrete 30% to 40% of each dose as unchanged amphetamine, plus another roughly 50% as a breakdown product. Those traces can linger in urine even after blood levels have dropped to zero, especially if you’ve been taking Adderall daily for weeks or months. Chronic use lets amphetamine accumulate in tissues, which is why regular users may test positive for up to 7 days after stopping.

Urine pH Has a Massive Effect

Your urine’s acidity level is one of the single biggest factors in how fast amphetamine leaves your body. In acidic urine (pH around 4.5 to 5.5), your kidneys excrete amphetamine dramatically faster. Studies have shown up to an 11-fold increase in amphetamine excreted in acidic urine compared to alkaline urine. The total urinary recovery of amphetamine can range anywhere from 1% to 75% of a dose depending on pH alone.

What makes urine more acidic or alkaline? Diet plays a role. High-protein diets, cranberry juice, and vitamin C tend to acidify urine, while vegetarian diets and antacids push it toward the alkaline side. This means two people taking the same dose of Adderall could have meaningfully different detection windows based on what they eat and drink.

Immediate-Release vs. Extended-Release

Adderall IR (immediate-release) delivers its full dose at once, with effects lasting 4 to 6 hours. Adderall XR (extended-release) is designed for slow, sustained release over about 12 hours. Because XR feeds amphetamine into your bloodstream over a longer period, it takes longer for your body to start fully eliminating the drug. This can add several hours to the tail end of the detection window, though the overall difference in urine detection time between the two formulations is modest, typically less than a day.

Age, Genetics, and Body Differences

Children actually clear amphetamine faster than adults. In kids aged 6 to 7, the half-life of d-amphetamine can stretch to nearly 17 hours, but by ages 10 to 12 it drops to under 10 hours. Adults sit around 10 to 13 hours depending on which amphetamine component you’re measuring. So younger adolescents and adults generally fall within a similar range, but older adults with slower kidney function may take longer.

Genetics matter too. Your liver uses a specific enzyme (CYP2D6) to break down amphetamine, and this enzyme varies significantly across the population. Some people are fast metabolizers who process the drug quickly, while others are slow metabolizers who take considerably longer. There’s no practical way to know which category you fall into without genetic testing, but it helps explain why two adults of similar age and weight can have different clearance times.

What Drug Tests Actually Look For

Federal workplace drug testing uses a two-step process. The initial screening test for amphetamines has a cutoff of 500 ng/mL. If your sample hits that threshold, it moves to a confirmation test with a lower cutoff of 250 ng/mL, which specifically identifies amphetamine. These cutoffs are set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and apply to all federally mandated testing. Private employers may use different cutoffs, but most follow the same standard.

If you have a valid prescription, a positive result doesn’t automatically count against you. The testing process typically includes a review by a medical review officer who will ask about prescribed medications before reporting a final result.

Detection in Blood, Saliva, and Hair

Urine testing is by far the most common, but other sample types have very different detection windows. Amphetamine is detectable in blood for only about 12 hours, making blood tests useful mainly for determining very recent use. Oral fluid (saliva) tests use a lower screening cutoff of 50 ng/mL with confirmation at 25 ng/mL, and generally detect amphetamine for 1 to 3 days.

Hair testing is a different category entirely. A standard hair test covers a 90-day window, since drug metabolites get incorporated into the hair shaft as it grows. Hair tests aren’t typically used for employment screening but show up in legal and forensic contexts. They won’t catch use from the past few days, though, because it takes about a week for new hair growth containing the drug to emerge from the scalp.

Practical Timeline for Most Adults

If you took a single prescribed dose of Adderall and have normal kidney function, you can reasonably expect it to be undetectable in urine within 2 to 3 days. If you’ve been taking it daily at therapeutic doses, allow 4 to 7 days after your last dose. Higher doses, alkaline urine, slower metabolism, and reduced kidney function all push you toward the longer end of that range. Acidic urine, younger age, and faster metabolism pull you toward the shorter end.
