What Purge Fluid Actually Is

Purge fluid is not blood, though it can look strikingly similar. It is a mixture of liquefied tissues, blood breakdown products, and fluids pushed out of cells and blood vessels by the gases of decomposition. The color ranges from reddish-brown to dark brown or nearly black, and it often has a frothy appearance due to the gas bubbles mixed into it. It exits the body wherever it can, most commonly from the mouth and nostrils, but also from the ears or other openings.

Because of its reddish color, purge fluid is frequently mistaken for bleeding caused by trauma. Forensic investigators distinguish between the two by checking for any actual wound or source of bleeding. Decomposition follows a roughly predictable sequence, though every case varies. In the first few days after death, the body goes through fresh and early decay stages where internal bacteria begin breaking down tissues but haven’t yet produced significant gas. Purge fluid starts during putrefaction, generally around days 4 through 10, as gas pressure inside the abdomen and chest cavities builds enough to push fluids outward.

The heaviest flow of purge fluid happens during what forensic scientists call black putrefaction, roughly 10 to 20 days after death. At this point, a large volume of body fluids drains from the body and seeps into surrounding surfaces or soil. The body is visibly bloated and discolored, and the skin may rupture in places, releasing additional fluid.

These timelines assume a body at moderate outdoor temperatures. Heat accelerates everything dramatically. A body left in a warm indoor environment or in direct sunlight during summer can begin purging in as little as two to three days. Cold conditions, on the other hand, slow bacterial activity significantly. A body stored in refrigeration or found in cold weather may not show purge fluid for weeks, or decomposition may effectively pause altogether.

Factors That Speed Up or Delay Purging

Temperature is the single biggest factor. Bacteria responsible for decomposition thrive in warm, moist conditions. A body in a heated room or a car trunk in summer will bloat and purge far faster than one in a cool basement or outdoors in winter. Water submersion creates its own timeline, as aquatic environments support different bacterial populations and the water itself interacts with body tissues.

Body size and composition also matter. Larger individuals and those with higher body fat tend to decompose more quickly because fat tissue breaks down readily and provides fuel for bacterial growth. Certain medications or medical conditions present at the time of death can slow or alter decomposition as well, though the effect is usually modest compared to environmental temperature.

Clothing and wrapping around the body can trap heat and moisture, creating a localized environment that speeds things up. Burial depth plays a role too. A shallow grave exposes the body to more warmth and insect activity than a deep one, which tends to be cooler and more oxygen-limited.

How Purge Fluid Is Managed After Death

In funeral care, managing purge fluid is a routine part of body preparation. During embalming, a funeral director performs cavity treatment by making a small incision just above the navel and inserting a hollow instrument into the chest and abdominal cavities. This punctures the hollow organs and suctions out their contents, including any accumulated fluids and gases. Embalming chemicals are then injected into these cavities to slow further bacterial activity and reduce the chance of additional purging.

Even after embalming, purge fluid can sometimes reappear, particularly if the body was already in early decomposition before preparation began or if there is a long interval between embalming and burial or viewing. Funeral directors monitor for this and may need to re-aspirate or apply additional treatments. For bodies that are not embalmed, refrigeration is the primary method of slowing decomposition and delaying purge fluid production.
