Most adults with the flu are contagious for about seven to eight days total: starting one day before symptoms appear and lasting five to seven days after symptoms begin. You’re most infectious during the first two days of illness, when the amount of virus in your respiratory tract peaks. After that, viral levels drop steadily and typically become undetectable by day six or seven of being sick.
The Full Contagion Timeline
The tricky part about the flu is that you start spreading the virus before you even know you’re sick. About 24 hours before your first symptom, the virus is already present in your upper respiratory tract at levels high enough to infect others. This presymptomatic window is one reason flu spreads so efficiently through households, offices, and schools.
Once symptoms hit, the virus ramps up fast. Viral levels in your nose and throat peak within the first two days of illness, which is when you’re shedding the most virus through coughs, sneezes, and even just breathing. From there, viral shedding gradually declines. Most healthy adults stop shedding detectable virus by around day six or seven after symptoms started. That doesn’t mean you feel great by then, but it does mean you’re far less likely to pass the flu to someone else.
Type matters slightly here. Influenza A tends to peak right around symptom onset, while influenza B can peak up to two days before symptoms appear and persist for six to seven days after that. In practical terms, though, the overall contagious window is similar for both.
Children Stay Contagious Longer
Kids can spread the flu for a longer stretch than adults. Healthy children may remain infectious for up to seven days after their symptoms resolve, not just after symptoms begin. Their immune systems take longer to clear the virus, which means they’re shedding it at meaningful levels well past the point where they might seem to be feeling better. This extended window is a major reason flu tears through daycares and elementary schools so quickly, and why sending a child back to school as soon as they seem improved can still put other kids at risk.
Weakened Immune Systems Change Everything
For people with compromised immune systems, the standard timeline doesn’t apply. Individuals who have undergone organ or bone marrow transplants, those undergoing chemotherapy, or people with other conditions that suppress immune function can shed influenza virus for weeks or even months. In one documented case, an immunocompromised child continued to test positive for influenza A in respiratory samples for over a year despite aggressive antiviral treatment. Without a fully functioning immune system, the body simply cannot clear the infection on the normal schedule.
If you or someone in your household is immunocompromised, assume the contagious period extends well beyond the typical week and take extra precautions with isolation and hygiene.
When You Can Return to Work or School
The CDC’s current guidance says you can go back to normal activities when both of these have been true for at least 24 hours: your symptoms are improving overall, and you haven’t had a fever without using fever-reducing medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. People with suspected or confirmed flu who don’t develop a fever should still stay home for at least five days after symptoms started.
That five-day mark lines up well with the biology. By day five, most people’s viral shedding has dropped significantly from its peak. You may still be shedding small amounts of virus after returning to work, but the risk of transmission is much lower. Wearing a mask for a few extra days after returning can add an additional layer of protection for the people around you.
Do Antivirals Shorten the Contagious Period?
Not as much as you’d hope. Antiviral medications like oseltamivir (Tamiflu) can reduce the duration of symptoms by roughly a day when taken within 48 hours of getting sick, but their effect on how long you actually shed virus is less clear. In studies measuring viral shedding directly, antiviral treatment did not produce a statistically significant reduction in shedding duration overall. The median duration of shedding was six days after symptom onset regardless of treatment. People who started antivirals within 24 hours of their first symptoms did clear the virus somewhat sooner, but the benefit shrank when treatment was delayed even slightly.
The practical takeaway: antivirals can help you feel better faster, but don’t assume they make you safe to be around others any sooner. Follow the same isolation guidelines whether or not you’re taking medication.
How the Virus Actually Spreads
Flu spreads primarily through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. These droplets can travel about six feet and land in the mouths or noses of nearby people. You can also catch the flu by touching a surface contaminated with the virus and then touching your face, though this is a less common route.
Because peak viral shedding happens in the first couple of days of illness, the period when you feel the absolute worst is also when you pose the greatest risk to others. If you can only isolate for part of your illness, those early days matter most. Frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying out of shared spaces during the first 48 to 72 hours of symptoms will do the most to protect the people around you.
