These tumors release a protein that mimics parathyroid hormone, tricking the body into flooding the bloodstream with calcium. Survival times vary depending on whether the cancer has spread and how it’s treated, but dogs with this type of cancer and elevated calcium generally face a prognosis measured in months rather than years.

Treatable Causes With Better Outcomes

Primary hyperparathyroidism, where one or more of the tiny parathyroid glands in the neck becomes overactive (usually due to a benign growth), is one of the most fixable causes of hypercalcemia. Surgery to remove the affected gland is often curative. Dogs who undergo successful surgery typically return to normal calcium levels quickly and can live out their full natural lifespan with no ongoing issues.

Addison’s disease, vitamin D toxicity (sometimes from eating rodent poison or certain plants), and granulomatous diseases like fungal infections can all raise calcium levels too. In each of these cases, treating the root problem usually brings calcium back to normal. Dogs whose hypercalcemia resolves with treatment are not living on a shortened clock from the calcium itself.

Idiopathic hypercalcemia, where no cause is found despite thorough testing, tends to be mild and chronic. These dogs can often live for years with monitoring, dietary changes, and sometimes medication to keep calcium from climbing high enough to cause organ damage.

The reason hypercalcemia matters beyond the underlying disease is that persistently elevated calcium is toxic to organs, particularly the kidneys. Calcium deposits can form in kidney tissue, gradually destroying its ability to filter waste.
