The Randy Gardner Experiment
Gardner’s 11-day record remains the most thoroughly documented case of voluntary sleep deprivation. Stanford sleep researcher William Dement and physician John Ross observed him throughout, recording a steady decline in nearly every measurable mental function. His analytical abilities, perception, motivation, memory, and motor control all deteriorated.
By day four, Gardner was experiencing hallucinations and delusions along with an extremely short attention span. He later described the experience as feeling like early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, with memories slipping away and reality becoming unreliable. He recovered after sleeping, but the experiment was striking enough that Guinness World Records eventually stopped recognizing sleep deprivation attempts altogether, citing safety concerns. The last recorded attempt they acknowledged was Robert McDonald’s 453 hours and 40 minutes of wakefulness.
Can Sleep Deprivation Actually Kill You?
In healthy humans, the body’s defense mechanisms make it nearly impossible to die from voluntarily staying awake. Your brain will eventually override your willpower with microsleeps or force you into unconsciousness. The real danger from acute sleep deprivation in everyday life comes from impaired judgment: car crashes, falls, and workplace accidents.

Gardner needed people talking to him, playing games with him, and physically keeping him engaged to make it through his 11 days.
