What Happens Above 86°F
The 56-day guideline assumes temperatures stay at or below 86°F. If your home, car, or travel environment is hotter than that, the medication can degrade faster. In warm climates or during summer months, keep your opened pen in the refrigerator or in an insulated cooling case. Never leave Ozempic in a hot car, on a sunny windowsill, or anywhere it could be exposed to sustained heat.
You should also keep the pen cap on when you’re not injecting. This protects the medication from light exposure, which can also affect its stability over time.
Traveling With Ozempic
When flying, pack your Ozempic pen in your carry-on luggage rather than checked bags. Cargo holds can reach extreme temperatures that would compromise the medication. An insulated travel case or small cooler helps keep the pen at a stable temperature during transit, especially on long flights or in warm destinations.
If you’re driving, keep the pen in the main cabin of the car rather than the trunk, where temperatures swing more dramatically. Avoid leaving it in a parked car for extended periods. For security screening at airports, place the pen and any cooling packs in a clear plastic bag. Ozempic is a prescription injectable, so carrying it through security is routine.
Signs the Medication Has Gone Bad
Ozempic should be clear and colorless. If the liquid looks cloudy, has particles floating in it, or has changed color, do not use it. These visual changes can signal that the medication has broken down, whether from heat exposure, freezing, or exceeding the 56-day window. A degraded pen may not deliver the expected dose, which could affect your blood sugar management or weight loss progress.
If you’re unsure whether a pen was stored properly, such as after a power outage that warmed your fridge or a pen left in a hot car for several hours, it’s safer to replace it. The medication’s effectiveness depends on the protein structure of semaglutide remaining intact, and there’s no way to test that at home.
