Water can stay trapped in your ear canal for anywhere from a few hours to several days. In most cases it drains on its own within a day, but if your ear canal is narrow or partially blocked by wax, water can pool there much longer. The real concern isn’t the water itself but what happens when it sits too long: prolonged moisture softens the skin lining your ear canal, creating an opening for bacteria or fungi to take hold. That process typically begins within 48 hours of continuous moisture exposure.
Why Water Gets Stuck in the First Place
Your ear canal isn’t a straight tube. It curves slightly and ends at the eardrum, forming a small pocket where water can collect. Surface tension, the same force that lets a water droplet hold its shape on a countertop, is what keeps that small amount of water clinging inside instead of simply rolling out. The narrower the canal, the stronger that surface tension effect becomes relative to the space, which is why children’s ears are especially prone to trapping water.
Earwax can make things worse or better depending on the situation. A thin layer of wax is actually water-repellent, helping moisture slide out. But a buildup of wax can create a dam that holds water behind it, extending how long the canal stays wet.
When Trapped Water Becomes Dangerous
The clock starts ticking once water settles in your ear canal and stays there. Constant moisture softens and breaks down the thin skin lining the canal, a process called maceration. Once that skin barrier is compromised, bacteria and fungi that are normally harmless on the surface can penetrate deeper and multiply. This is swimmer’s ear (otitis externa), and it can develop rapidly, often within 48 hours of ongoing water exposure.
Kids are at higher risk because their smaller ear canals don’t drain as easily. During summer, when children swim daily without drying their ears afterward, water pools in the canal repeatedly and the infection risk climbs with each passing day. Adults who swim frequently, use earbuds for long periods after swimming, or have narrow or wax-blocked canals face similar odds.
Swimmer’s ear that goes untreated can progress beyond a simple canal infection. In some cases, the inflammation spreads to the outer ear itself, causing visible redness and swelling of the surrounding skin.
Signs the Water Has Caused a Problem
A muffled or plugged feeling that lasts a few hours after swimming is normal. What isn’t normal:
- Pain that worsens when you tug on your earlobe or press on the small flap in front of your ear canal
- Fever, even a low one
- Drainage coming from the ear, especially if it’s cloudy or has an odor
- Difficulty hearing that persists beyond a day
- Redness or swelling of the outer ear
Any of these symptoms warrants a call to your doctor. Swimmer’s ear is straightforward to treat when caught early but can become significantly more painful and harder to resolve if it spreads.
Safe Ways to Get Water Out
The simplest approach is gravity. Tilt your head so the affected ear faces the ground and hold that position for a minute or two. Gently pulling your earlobe in different directions while tilted can reshape the canal just enough to break the water’s surface tension and let it escape.
A hair dryer on its lowest heat and lowest fan setting, held about a foot from your ear, can also help. The warm air raises the temperature of the trapped water, which lowers its surface tension and helps it evaporate. Keep the dryer moving so you don’t overheat the skin.
For a home drying solution, mix equal parts white vinegar and rubbing alcohol. Put about 1 teaspoon (5 milliliters) into the affected ear, let it sit briefly, then tilt your head to drain it out. The alcohol speeds evaporation while the vinegar creates an environment that discourages bacterial and fungal growth. Similar pre-mixed drops are available over the counter at most pharmacies. Don’t use this method if you have ear tubes, a perforated eardrum, or any open sore in the ear.
Another technique involves gently blowing air through your nose while pinching your nostrils closed (the same motion you’d use to equalize pressure on an airplane). This increases pressure in the middle ear, pushing the eardrum slightly outward, which can compress the air column behind the trapped water and help force it out.
Why You Shouldn’t Shake Your Head Too Hard
Vigorous head-shaking is the instinctive response, but physics research from Cornell University published in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics reveals a real problem with this approach. The force needed to dislodge water from a narrow ear canal can be surprisingly high. In children and infants, whose canals are smaller, the acceleration required to overcome the water’s surface tension can reach roughly 14g, a level comparable to the forces that cause concussions in contact sports. For adults with wider canals, the threshold is lower but still significant. Gentle tilting and the methods above are far safer than aggressively shaking a child’s head to clear water.
Preventing Water From Getting Trapped
If you swim regularly, drying your ears after every session is the single most effective preventive step. Tilt each ear toward the ground for 30 seconds, then use a towel to gently dry the outer ear. Using the vinegar-and-alcohol drops after swimming, before any symptoms appear, helps keep the canal dry and slightly acidic, which discourages infection.
Silicone or custom-molded earplugs create a watertight seal and are worth the investment if you’re prone to swimmer’s ear. Avoid inserting cotton swabs or anything else into the canal to dry it, as this can push wax deeper, scratch the skin lining, and actually make trapped water harder to remove next time.
