Most antidepressants clear your system within a few days to a few weeks after your last dose, depending on the specific medication. The key variable is something called the half-life: the time it takes your body to eliminate half of the drug. After roughly five to seven half-lives, a drug is effectively gone from your body.
How Half-Life Determines Clearance Time
Every medication leaves your body at a predictable rate. After one half-life, 50% of the drug remains. After two half-lives, 25% remains. By seven half-lives, only about 1% is left, and the drug is considered fully eliminated. This means a medication with a 24-hour half-life takes about a week to clear, while one with a 5-hour half-life can be gone within a day and a half.
Some antidepressants also produce active metabolites, breakdown products that still have effects on your brain chemistry. When a metabolite is active, it’s the metabolite’s half-life that really determines how long the drug’s influence lasts, not just the parent drug’s.
SSRIs: Clearance Times by Medication
SSRIs are the most commonly prescribed antidepressants, and their half-lives vary significantly from one to another.
- Fluoxetine (Prozac) has the longest clearance time of any SSRI. The drug itself has a half-life of one to three days, but its active metabolite has a half-life of 7 to 15 days. This means fluoxetine takes roughly four to five weeks to fully leave your system. That long tail is actually protective: it makes fluoxetine one of the least likely antidepressants to cause withdrawal symptoms.

SNRIs: Generally Faster to Clear

Your liver uses a family of enzymes to break down antidepressants, and genetic variations can make those enzymes work faster or slower than average. The two enzymes most involved in processing antidepressants are CYP2D6 (which handles many SSRIs and tricyclics) and CYP2C19 (which processes escitalopram, sertraline, and citalopram). People with slower versions of these enzymes will have the drug in their system longer. The faster a drug clears your system, the more likely you are to experience withdrawal. This is why short half-life medications like venlafaxine and duloxetine are the most common culprits, while fluoxetine rarely causes discontinuation problems.
Common withdrawal symptoms include dizziness, nausea, irritability, “brain zaps” (brief electric shock sensations), insomnia, and flu-like feelings. These symptoms reflect your brain adjusting to the absence of the drug, not the drug itself leaving your body. In other words, the drug may be physically gone within days, but your nervous system can take weeks to recalibrate.
Washout Periods When Switching Medications
