How Long Do Cuts Take to Heal? Stages & Timelines

Most minor cuts and scrapes heal within 7 to 10 days. Deeper cuts that need stitches take several weeks, and wounds that reach muscle or bone can take months. The exact timeline depends on where the cut is, how deep it goes, and your overall health.

The Four Stages of Healing

Every cut, no matter how small, moves through the same four-stage process. Understanding these stages helps you gauge whether your wound is on track.

The first stage is immediate: your blood clots and the bleeding stops, usually within minutes. Then inflammation kicks in during days 1 through 4. The area turns red, swells, and feels warm or tender. This is your immune system clearing out bacteria and damaged cells. It looks alarming, but it’s a sign the process is working.

From roughly day 4 through day 21, your body builds new tissue. The wound fills in from the bottom up, edges pull together, and new skin forms over the surface. This is when you’ll notice the cut shrinking and a pinkish color replacing the raw look. The final stage, remodeling, begins around day 21 and can continue for up to two years. During this phase, the scar tissue gradually strengthens and flattens, though it never becomes quite as strong as the original skin.

Healing Times by Wound Severity

A paper cut or kitchen nick that only breaks the top layer of skin closes in about a week. These superficial wounds rarely leave a visible scar.

Cuts deep enough to need stitches, such as a knife slip that exposes fatty tissue, typically take several weeks to close and a few months before the scar fully matures. Surgical wounds follow a similar timeline. Chronic or very deep wounds, especially on the lower legs or feet, can take months to heal completely.

When a Cut Needs Stitches

If a cut is deep enough that you can see fat or muscle, won’t stop bleeding with firm pressure, or has edges that don’t stay together on their own, it likely needs stitches. Location matters too: cuts on the face, hands, or over a joint almost always benefit from closure because of the movement and cosmetic concerns.

Timing is important. The general guideline is to get stitches within 6 to 8 hours of the injury. For cuts on the hands and feet, that window can be as short as 6 hours because infection risk is higher. Clean facial lacerations, on the other hand, can often be closed up to 24 hours later because the face has excellent blood supply. After these windows, doctors may still close a wound if it can be thoroughly cleaned and shows no signs of infection.

Why Some Cuts Take Longer

Several factors can stretch healing time well beyond the averages. Age is one: skin becomes thinner and blood flow decreases as you get older, so a cut that would close in a week on a teenager might take two or three weeks in someone over 65.

Diabetes is one of the biggest obstacles to wound healing. High blood sugar damages small blood vessels, reducing the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the wound. It also impairs the immune cells responsible for cleaning up debris and fighting infection, and it slows the skin cells that need to migrate across the wound to close it. People with diabetes, particularly those with reduced sensation in their feet, should monitor even minor cuts closely.

Smoking constricts blood vessels and starves wounds of oxygen. Poor nutrition plays a role as well. Your body needs protein to build new tissue, vitamin C to produce collagen, and zinc to support immune function and cell growth. The recommended daily intake of zinc is 8 mg for women and 11 mg for men. If you’re healing from a significant wound and your diet is lacking, a supplement can help, though staying under 40 mg per day is important to avoid side effects. Certain medications, particularly corticosteroids and some anti-inflammatory drugs, also slow healing by dampening the inflammatory response your body needs to initiate repair.

Moist Healing vs. Letting It Scab

The old advice to “let it air out” is outdated. Studies show that wounds kept in a moist environment heal roughly 50% faster than wounds left to dry and scab over. A scab might feel protective, but it actually creates a barrier that new skin cells have to burrow underneath, slowing the process.

For a minor cut, this means cleaning the wound, applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly or an antibiotic ointment, and covering it with a bandage. Change the bandage daily or whenever it gets wet or dirty. Once the wound has fully closed and new skin covers the surface, you can leave it uncovered.

Signs a Cut Is Infected

Some redness and swelling around a fresh cut is normal inflammation. An infection looks different. Watch for redness that spreads outward from the wound rather than shrinking over time, increasing pain after the first day or two, warmth that intensifies, or thick drainage that is white, yellow, green, or brown. Infected wounds often produce a foul smell. If the drainage changes color or develops an odor after initially looking clear, the infection is getting worse.

Fever, red streaks extending from the wound toward your torso, or a wound that simply refuses to improve after two weeks are all signals that something beyond normal healing is happening.

Reducing Scars

How a cut scars depends partly on genetics and partly on how you care for it. Keeping the wound moist during healing is the single most effective thing you can do. Sun exposure darkens new scar tissue, so covering the area or applying sunscreen for several months after the wound closes helps prevent discoloration.

For deeper cuts or surgical wounds, silicone gel sheets and silicone gel applied directly to the scar have been shown to improve scar thickness and surface irregularity within the first several weeks of use. Both forms of silicone perform similarly, so choose whichever is more practical for the location of your scar. These products work best when started early in the remodeling phase, after the surface has fully closed, and used consistently for at least two to three months.

Scars continue to remodel for up to two years. A scar that looks raised and red at six weeks may flatten and fade significantly by the one-year mark without any intervention at all.
