Delta 8 edibles typically produce effects lasting 4 to 8 hours, with the most intense period hitting around 3 hours after you eat them. That’s shorter than most people experience with standard (delta 9) THC edibles, though the exact timeline depends on your metabolism, body composition, and how much you’ve eaten beforehand.
Onset, Peak, and Total Duration
After you eat a delta 8 gummy or other edible, expect to wait 30 to 60 minutes before feeling anything. Unlike smoking or vaping, the cannabinoid has to travel through your digestive system and get processed by your liver before it reaches your bloodstream. That liver processing actually converts delta 8 into a more potent form (an “11-hydroxy” metabolite) that crosses into the brain more effectively than the original compound. This is why edibles hit differently than inhaled products, and why the effects last so much longer.
Peak intensity arrives around the 3-hour mark. This is when blood levels are highest and the high feels strongest. From there, effects gradually taper over the next several hours. Most people feel essentially back to normal within 6 to 8 hours of their dose, though some residual relaxation or mild grogginess can linger beyond that window.
How Delta 8 Compares to Delta 9 Edibles
A survey published in the Journal of Cannabis Research found that delta 8 effects are both less intense and shorter-lasting than delta 9 for most users. About 47% of respondents said delta 9 lasted noticeably longer, while 41% said the duration was roughly the same. Only 13% felt delta 8 lasted longer. So if you’re used to regular THC edibles lasting a full 8 hours, delta 8 edibles will likely wrap up a bit sooner, closer to the 4 to 6 hour range for many people.
One interesting finding from that same research: older individuals reported delta 8 effects lasting longer relative to delta 9 than younger participants did. Age slows the liver enzymes responsible for clearing cannabinoids, which may explain the difference.
What Changes the Duration
Several factors push the timeline shorter or longer:
- Body fat percentage. Delta 8 is fat-soluble, meaning it dissolves into and gets stored in fat tissue. If you carry more body fat, your body holds onto the compound longer, which can extend both the high and the detection window afterward.
- Metabolism. Faster metabolisms clear cannabinoids more efficiently through liver enzyme activity. Younger, more physically active people tend to process delta 8 more quickly.
- Tolerance. Regular use builds tolerance to delta 8, and interestingly, the liver metabolite responsible for the high may itself contribute to that tolerance over time. Frequent users often report shorter, less intense experiences from the same dose.
- Dose. Higher doses simply take longer to metabolize. A 10 mg gummy will clear your system faster than a 50 mg one.
How Food Affects the Timeline
Whether your stomach is full or empty when you take a delta 8 edible meaningfully changes the experience. On an empty stomach, effects can kick in as fast as 30 minutes, often feel stronger, but may wear off slightly sooner. Your body isn’t competing with other food for digestive resources, so the delta 8 moves through quickly.
Eating a meal before your edible, especially one with healthy fats like avocado, nuts, or olive oil, slows the onset to 60 to 90 minutes. But the tradeoff is real: dietary fat increases the bioavailability of fat-soluble compounds like THC, meaning your body actually absorbs more of the delta 8. The result is a more gradual, controlled high that tends to last longer. If you want a smoother, extended experience rather than a sharp peak, eating beforehand is the simplest way to get there.
The Morning-After Effect
Some people notice residual grogginess or fatigue the day after taking delta 8 edibles, particularly at higher doses. This isn’t unique to delta 8. Research on THC more broadly has found that high blood levels the morning after use can leave people still feeling mildly impaired, and a 2019 study linked cannabis use to daytime fatigue the following day. Not everyone experiences this. The likelihood depends on your dose, tolerance, and individual metabolism. Taking edibles earlier in the evening rather than right before bed gives your body more time to clear the compound before morning.
How Long Delta 8 Stays Detectable
The high might last 6 to 8 hours, but delta 8 metabolites stick around in your body far longer. Standard drug tests don’t distinguish between delta 8 and delta 9. Both produce similar metabolites that trigger a positive result. The estimated half-life of delta 8 is 24 to 36 hours, meaning it takes that long for your body to eliminate just half of what’s in your system.
Detection windows vary by test type:
- Urine test: Roughly 3 days after a single use. For regular users, this extends significantly, potentially to 30 days or more.
- Blood test: 2 to 12 hours after use.
- Saliva test: Up to 24 hours.
- Hair test: Up to 90 days.
Because delta 8 edibles produce elevated levels of the 11-hydroxy metabolite compared to inhaled products (a direct result of liver processing), they may actually leave a stronger metabolic footprint than vaping or smoking the same amount of delta 8. If you have a drug test coming up, edibles are not the safer choice just because delta 8 is less potent than delta 9. The test will flag both.
