How Long Do Porcelain Veneers Really Last?

Porcelain veneers typically last 10 to 15 years, with some lasting 20 years or more. A systematic review of clinical studies found survival rates ranging from 53% to 94.4% at the 10- to 12-year mark, and modern ceramic materials have pushed those numbers even higher. How long yours actually last depends on the material used, how well they were bonded, and how you treat them day to day.

What the Long-Term Data Shows

Porcelain veneers perform well in clinical studies, though the range of outcomes is wider than most dental offices advertise. In studies tracking patients for under five years, survival rates range from 80% to 100%. At five to seven years, that range drops to 47% to 100%, a spread that reflects how much technique, material choice, and patient habits matter. By 10 to 12 years, studies report survival rates between 53% and 94.4%.

The best results come from newer ceramic formulations. Lithium disilicate, the material behind popular brands like E.max, has a flexural strength of 350 to 400 MPa, roughly three to four times stronger than older feldspathic porcelain. Veneers made from this material have demonstrated survival rates exceeding 90% at 10 years in well-selected cases. One study of 84 people with porcelain veneers found they lasted as long as 20 years. Reliable data beyond that point doesn’t yet exist.

Porcelain vs. Composite Veneers

Composite veneers cost less but have a noticeably shorter lifespan. You can expect about five years or more from composite, compared to 10 or more from porcelain. Composite is also softer and more prone to staining and wear over time, which is why many people choose porcelain for front teeth where appearance matters most. That said, composite veneers can be repaired chairside and don’t require removing enamel in many cases, making them a reasonable choice if cost or reversibility is a priority.

Why Veneers Fail

Veneers rarely fail in one dramatic moment. Most problems develop gradually, and the causes fall into a few categories.

Fracture and chipping are among the most common reasons for replacement. A fracture is a complete break that compromises the veneer’s structure, while a chip is a localized piece of material breaking away, often at the biting edge or margin. Both typically require full replacement rather than simple polishing.

Debonding happens when the adhesive connection between the veneer and the tooth weakens. This can occur if the original bonding was done on dentin instead of enamel (enamel bonds are significantly stronger), or if the cement gradually breaks down over many years. A debonded veneer may feel loose or shift slightly.

Decay underneath is a risk people often overlook. The tooth beneath a veneer is still vulnerable to cavities, particularly along the margins where the veneer meets natural tooth structure. When the supporting tooth decays, the veneer separates from it and must be removed regardless of the veneer’s own condition.

Discoloration of the veneer itself is rare with porcelain, but the dental cement behind it can darken over time and become visible through the thin shell. This gives the appearance of a stained veneer when the porcelain surface is actually fine.

How Tooth Preparation Affects Longevity

Traditional veneers require removing a thin layer of enamel, typically 0.3 to 0.7 millimeters, to create space for the porcelain shell. This is an irreversible step, but it produces a strong enamel-to-cement bond that holds up well over time. The amount of remaining tooth structure and the preparation design have considerable effects on how much load the veneer can handle before failing.

No-prep veneers skip this step entirely, preserving all natural tooth structure. They offer real advantages: no anesthesia, no postoperative sensitivity, no temporary restorations, and the option to reverse the treatment later. Clinical studies show acceptable performance and survival for no-prep veneers over seven years. However, they work best on specific tooth shapes and alignments. If your teeth are already bulky or protrude slightly, adding material on top without removing any can look and feel too thick.

Signs Your Veneers Need Replacing

You can often detect problems yourself before they become urgent. Roughness along the edges that you can feel with your tongue is a clear sign of marginal breakdown. Visible chips or cracks, even small ones, tend to worsen over time because they create stress points in the porcelain. If a veneer looks darker than it used to, the cement is likely degrading. And if you notice a veneer pulling away from the gumline or feeling loose, the bond has been compromised.

Gum recession can also expose the margin where the veneer meets your natural tooth. This doesn’t always mean the veneer has failed, but it creates a visible line that may bother you cosmetically, and it leaves the root surface vulnerable to decay.

Daily Habits That Extend Their Life

Porcelain is hard and stain-resistant, but it’s not indestructible. A few habits make a meaningful difference in how many years you get from your veneers.

  • Use non-abrasive toothpaste. Whitening and gritty formulas can dull the polished surface of porcelain over time. A standard fluoride toothpaste works well.
  • Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth. Grinding places repeated, excessive force on veneers and is one of the most common causes of fractures. A custom-fitted guard from your dentist distributes that force away from the porcelain.
  • Avoid biting hard objects directly. Ice, pen caps, fingernails, and hard candy concentrate force on a small area of the veneer’s edge, right where chips are most likely to start.
  • Keep up with regular dental cleanings. Professional cleanings help catch early signs of marginal breakdown or decay beneath the veneer before they become expensive problems.

Porcelain veneers are not a permanent restoration, but with the right material, solid bonding, and basic care, 15 years is a realistic expectation for most people. Many will get closer to 20.
