THC from gummies typically stays detectable in your system for 3 to 30 days, depending on how often you use them and what type of drug test you’re facing. A single gummy will clear much faster than weeks of daily use, and urine tests, blood tests, saliva tests, and hair tests each have very different detection windows.
The reason the range is so wide comes down to how your body processes edibles. When you eat a THC gummy, your liver converts THC into a metabolite called THC-COOH, which is fat-soluble and gets stored in your fat cells. That metabolite is what most drug tests actually look for, and it lingers in your body far longer than the high itself lasts.
Detection Windows by Test Type
Drug tests don’t distinguish between THC from gummies and THC from smoking. The detection windows are based on how frequently you use cannabis, not the method of consumption. That said, edibles do take longer to enter your bloodstream than smoking, which can slightly shift the start of the detection window.
Urine tests are by far the most common, especially for workplace screening. The standard cutoff used in federally regulated testing is 50 ng/mL for the initial screen, with a confirmatory test at 15 ng/mL. At the 50 ng/mL cutoff, a single use is typically detectable for only 1 to 4 days. For chronic daily users, detection can extend to about 10 days at that same cutoff. Saliva tests generally detect THC for 24 to 72 hours after use. These are increasingly used for roadside testing because they reflect recent impairment rather than past use.
Hair follicle tests have the longest window: up to 90 days. However, hair testing is most reliable for identifying daily or near-daily use. A single gummy is unlikely to produce enough metabolite to trigger a positive hair test. These tests are better at revealing patterns of regular use over time.
Occasional Use vs. Daily Use

Daily or near-daily use is a different story. When you consume THC regularly, the metabolite builds up in your fat tissue faster than your body can eliminate it. Even at the standard 50 ng/mL cutoff, chronic users can test positive for up to 10 days after stopping. At the 20 ng/mL cutoff, that window stretches to 21 days. In rare cases involving very heavy, long-term users with higher body fat, anecdotal reports suggest even longer windows, though controlled research puts the upper bound at about three weeks.
Why Body Fat and Metabolism Matter
THC is lipophilic, meaning it dissolves in fat rather than water. When you eat a gummy, your body stores THC and its metabolites in fat cells throughout your body. Over time, those metabolites slowly release back into your bloodstream and get filtered out through urine. This is why THC behaves so differently from water-soluble substances like alcohol, which clear your system in hours.
People with a higher body fat percentage have more storage capacity for THC metabolites, which generally means a longer detection window. Someone with lower body fat and a faster metabolic rate will typically clear the same dose more quickly. Age plays a role too: metabolic processes slow down as you get older, potentially extending clearance time.
There’s also a genetic component. Your liver uses a specific enzyme system to break down THC, and genetic variations in those enzymes make some people naturally fast metabolizers and others slow metabolizers. Two people who eat the same gummy on the same day can have meaningfully different detection windows based purely on their biology.
Exercise Can Temporarily Spike THC Levels
This one catches people off guard. Because THC metabolites are stored in fat, intense exercise or rapid weight loss can actually release stored THC back into your bloodstream. If you’re trying to clear your system before a test, a heavy workout in the days right before could temporarily increase your detectable THC levels rather than lower them. Regular exercise over a longer period helps your body burn through fat stores and can accelerate overall clearance, but timing matters. Exercising weeks before a test is helpful; exercising the day before may not be.
How Gummies Differ From Smoking
When you smoke cannabis, THC enters your bloodstream through your lungs almost immediately. What Actually Shortens the Window
No supplement, detox drink, or special tea has been proven to meaningfully speed up THC clearance in controlled studies. The factors that genuinely shorten your detection window are straightforward: lower body fat, a faster metabolism, good hydration (which keeps your kidneys filtering efficiently), and simply time. Drinking excessive water right before a urine test can dilute the sample, but most labs flag diluted specimens and require a retest.
If you’ve used a single gummy and you’re an otherwise infrequent user, you can reasonably expect to test clean on a standard urine screen within 4 to 7 days. If you’ve been using gummies daily for weeks, plan for at least 2 to 3 weeks of abstinence before a urine test, and longer if you have a higher body fat percentage or a slower metabolism.
