Most Crest White Strips should be left on for 30 minutes per session, though the exact time ranges from 5 to 45 minutes depending on which product you’re using. The wear time is printed on your specific box, and sticking to it matters more than you might think. Leaving strips on longer won’t give you whiter teeth, but it can cause sensitivity and gum irritation.
Wear Times by Product
Crest sells several tiers of whitening strips, and each has a different recommended wear time based on its peroxide concentration. The lower-concentration strips generally stay on longer, while the stronger formulas work in less time.
- Crest 3D White Classic (lower peroxide): 30 minutes once daily
- Crest 3D White Professional Effects: 30 minutes once daily
- Crest 3D White Glamorous White: 30 minutes once daily
- Crest 3D White 1 Hour Express: 60 minutes once daily (shorter treatment course)
- Crest 3D White with LED Light: typically 30 minutes once daily
The peroxide concentration across Crest’s product line ranges from about 6.5% to 14% hydrogen peroxide. Higher-concentration strips deliver more peroxide in less time, which is why some products promise visible results in fewer days. Regardless of the tier, the recommended session length is calibrated to that specific concentration. Doubling the time does not double the whitening.
What Happens If You Leave Them On Too Long
Hydrogen peroxide works by penetrating your enamel and breaking apart stain molecules beneath the surface. When you leave strips on past the recommended time, the peroxide keeps penetrating deeper, reaching the layer of tooth underneath your enamel called dentin. Dentin contains nerve endings, which is why the most common side effect of overwear is a sharp, stinging sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods.
Beyond sensitivity, prolonged exposure can irritate or chemically burn your gum tissue, causing redness, soreness, and peeling. Some people notice their gums temporarily turn white where the gel made contact. You may also end up with uneven whitening or blotchy white spots, since different areas of enamel absorb peroxide at different rates.
If you accidentally fell asleep with strips on overnight, the damage is usually temporary. Sensitivity and gum irritation typically resolve within a few days. Repeated overwear is the real concern: it can weaken enamel over time, making teeth more vulnerable to cavities.
How to Get the Best Results
The whitening gel works best when it stays in full contact with dry tooth surfaces for the entire session. A few simple steps make a noticeable difference in how well the strips perform.
Before applying, gently brush your teeth with just water (skip toothpaste, since fluoride can create a thin barrier that reduces absorption). Floss to clear plaque and food from between teeth so those areas whiten evenly. Then pat your teeth dry with a clean tissue. A dry surface helps the strip grip and prevents saliva from diluting the peroxide. Saliva neutralizes hydrogen peroxide quickly, so if the strip keeps sliding around or pooling with spit, less of the active ingredient is actually reaching your enamel.
If you prefer to brush with toothpaste beforehand, wait at least 30 minutes before applying the strips. Brushing can temporarily make gum tissue more sensitive, and applying peroxide immediately afterward increases the chance of irritation.
Once the timer is up, peel the strips off and rinse your mouth. You can brush and floss normally after removal.
Eating and Drinking After Removal
Your enamel stays slightly more porous than usual for 24 to 48 hours after each whitening session. During that window, your teeth absorb pigments from food and drinks more easily, which can undermine the whitening you just did. Coffee, red wine, tea, tomato sauce, and berries are the biggest culprits.
For the first 24 hours after each session, stick to light-colored foods and clear beverages. After 48 hours you can eat normally, though limiting heavily pigmented foods throughout your entire whitening course will give you the most consistent results.
How Long the Full Course Takes
A single 30-minute session won’t transform your smile. Most Crest strips are designed to be used once daily for 10 to 20 consecutive days, depending on the product. You’ll typically notice a difference within the first few days, but full results come at the end of the recommended course. Skipping days stretches out the timeline and can lead to less even whitening, since the cumulative effect of daily sessions is part of how the product is designed to work.
Some express products compress the course into fewer days by using higher concentrations or longer single sessions. These can deliver faster results but tend to cause more sensitivity. If your teeth are already prone to sensitivity, the standard 30-minute, multi-week products are generally the gentler option.
