How long you leave Opalescence on depends entirely on which product and concentration you’re using. Wear times range from as little as 15 minutes for the strongest formulas to overnight for the gentlest one. Using the wrong time for your concentration can cause unnecessary sensitivity or reduce your results.
Opalescence Custom Tray Wear Times
Opalescence custom trays (sometimes called Opalescence PF) come in five concentrations of carbamide peroxide. Each has a specific daily wear window:
- 10% carbamide peroxide: 8 to 10 hours per day, or overnight while you sleep
- 15% carbamide peroxide: 4 to 6 hours per day
- 20% carbamide peroxide: 2 to 4 hours per day
- 35% carbamide peroxide: 30 to 60 minutes per day
- 45% carbamide peroxide: 15 to 30 minutes per day
The pattern is straightforward: higher concentrations work faster but need less time on your teeth. The 10% version is the most popular for overnight use since its lower strength makes it comfortable to sleep in. If you prefer shorter sessions during the day, the 20% or 35% options let you whiten in a couple of hours or less.
Opalescence Go Wear Times
Opalescence Go uses pre-filled, disposable trays with hydrogen peroxide instead of carbamide peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is a stronger bleaching agent at the same percentage, so the wear times are shorter:
- 10% hydrogen peroxide: 30 to 60 minutes per day
- 15% hydrogen peroxide: 15 to 20 minutes per day
These trays are designed for convenience. You don’t need a custom mold from your dentist. Just pop them in, wear them for the recommended time, and toss them when you’re done.
How Many Days the Full Treatment Takes
A single session isn’t going to transform your smile. You’ll use Opalescence once a day, waiting at least 24 hours between treatments, until you reach the shade you want. For Opalescence Go, the recommended course is 5 to 10 days. Custom tray treatments vary more depending on your starting shade and concentration, but most people whiten for one to two weeks.
If you’re not experiencing any gum or tooth sensitivity, you can whiten daily without breaks. If sensitivity does show up, take a few days off before your next session. The results are cumulative, so pausing won’t erase your progress.
What Happens If You Leave It On Too Long
It’s tempting to think that longer wear time equals whiter teeth, but exceeding the recommended window creates real problems. The bleaching agent works by oxidizing stains on and below the tooth surface, and in doing so it makes your enamel more porous. Staying within the guidelines keeps this effect minor and reversible. Going beyond them pushes it into damaging territory.
Overuse can burn your gums, cause lasting tooth sensitivity, and actually make teeth look worse. As enamel breaks down from excessive peroxide exposure, the yellowish layer underneath (called dentin) becomes more visible. In extreme cases, teeth can turn translucent or grayish. The sensitivity comes from the bleaching agent reaching the nerve-rich tissue inside your teeth, which a 2018 study in the Dentistry Journal confirmed happens with prolonged direct exposure to peroxide.
The bottom line: if you’re using the 20% custom tray formula, take it out after 4 hours. If you’re using the 35%, don’t push past 60 minutes. The times exist to balance effectiveness with safety.
Managing Sensitivity During Treatment
Some tooth sensitivity during whitening is normal, especially in the first few days. Opalescence formulas contain potassium nitrate, an ingredient that helps calm nerve responses in teeth. The manufacturer also recommends using their Sensitivity Relief Toothpaste both before and after each whitening session to minimize discomfort.
If you develop significant sensitivity, gum irritation, or soreness in your lips or tongue, stop treatment. These side effects typically resolve within one to three days after you take a break. You can resume once you’re comfortable again. Switching to a lower concentration or shorter wear time within the recommended range often helps if sensitivity keeps recurring.
After You Remove the Trays
Your teeth are more porous right after whitening, which means they absorb stains more easily than usual. For the first 48 hours after each session, avoid deeply pigmented foods and drinks: coffee, tea, red wine, dark berries, chocolate, and cola. Acidic foods are also worth skipping during this window, since your enamel is temporarily more vulnerable.
Rinse your mouth and brush gently after removing the trays to clear any remaining gel. If you’re using custom trays, rinse those with cool water as well and store them in their case. Unopened Opalescence gel syringes stay effective for up to 24 months when stored according to the packaging instructions.
