The location of a bacterial infection is the single biggest factor in how long it takes to clear. Infections in areas with strong blood flow and easy antibiotic access tend to resolve faster than those in deeper tissues or organs.

Strep throat: With antibiotics, most people start feeling better within 1 to 2 days. The full course of medication typically runs 10 days even though symptoms fade much sooner. Without antibiotics, strep throat can resolve on its own, but it takes longer and carries a higher risk of complications.

But there’s a gap between when the drug starts killing bacteria and when you actually feel better, because your body still needs time to clear the damage and calm the inflammatory response. In studying hundreds of patients with long-lasting Salmonella infections, researchers found that the bacteria weren’t being replaced by new strains. But by becoming less aggressive, the bacteria also triggered a weaker immune response, creating a kind of molecular camouflage.
