Most blisters heal on their own within 3 to 7 days. The fluid inside gets reabsorbed by your body, the raised skin flattens, and new skin forms underneath. That’s the timeline for a typical friction blister, the kind you get from new shoes or raking the yard. Other types of blisters, like those from burns or medical conditions, can take significantly longer.
How a Blister Heals
A blister forms when friction, heat, or another irritant separates the top layer of skin from the layers beneath it. Your body fills that gap with clear fluid (mostly water and proteins) that acts as a cushion, protecting the raw skin underneath while new cells grow.
Over the next several days, your body gradually reabsorbs the fluid. The bubble flattens, and the outer layer of skin either peels away or reattaches as the fresh skin beneath matures. You’ll typically notice the blister shrinking within 2 to 3 days, with full healing by the end of the first week. The new skin underneath may look pink or slightly tender for a few more days after that, but it’s functional.
Healing Times by Blister Type
Friction blisters from shoes, tools, or sports equipment are the fastest to resolve: 3 to 7 days in most cases. These are superficial injuries, and your body is well equipped to handle them without intervention.
Burn blisters take considerably longer. A second-degree burn, which is deep enough to blister, generally needs one to three weeks to heal. The variation depends on how much skin was damaged and where the burn is located. Burns on thicker skin like the palms or soles tend to heal more slowly than burns on thinner areas. Severe burns that cover a large area or affect deeper tissue layers can take even longer and often require professional wound care.
Blisters caused by conditions like eczema, chickenpox, or shingles follow their own timelines tied to the underlying illness. Chickenpox blisters typically crust over within 5 to 10 days. Shingles blisters can take 2 to 4 weeks to fully heal and sometimes leave lasting sensitivity in the area.
Why Some Blisters Take Longer
Location matters a lot. A blister on your heel gets re-irritated every time you walk, which can double the healing time compared to one on your arm. Blisters over joints face a similar problem: constant movement stretches the skin and slows repair.
Your overall health plays a role too. Diabetes is one of the biggest factors that delays blister healing. In people with diabetes, the genes responsible for recruiting immune cells to a wound site are often suppressed. The specific immune cells your body needs for tissue repair, neutrophils and macrophages, show up in lower numbers. This means even a small blister can become a slow-healing wound that’s vulnerable to infection. If you have diabetes and notice a blister on your foot that isn’t improving within a week, that warrants medical attention.
Poor circulation from other causes, certain medications that suppress the immune system, and older age can all extend healing time beyond the typical window.
Popped vs. Intact Blisters
An intact blister heals faster and with less risk of infection than one that’s been popped. That roof of skin is a natural bandage. Once it’s gone, the raw tissue underneath is exposed to bacteria, and your body has to work harder to protect the area while also regenerating skin.
If a blister pops on its own, which larger blisters often do, keep the loose skin in place if possible. It still provides some protection. Clean the area gently, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly, and cover it with a bandage. A popped blister may add a few extra days to the healing timeline and requires more attentive wound care to prevent infection.
There are situations where draining a blister intentionally makes sense. Blisters on the palms, fingers, soles, and toes can be thick-walled and painful enough to limit movement. In those cases, making a small opening to release pressure can improve comfort. Blisters smaller than about 6 square millimeters (roughly the size of a pencil eraser tip) are generally fine to leave alone, as they’re unlikely to rupture on their own. Larger, tense blisters, especially over joints, are more likely to need attention.
Signs of Infection
Normal blister fluid is clear or slightly yellowish. If the fluid turns cloudy, milky, or greenish, that’s a sign of infection. Other red flags include increasing pain after the first day or two (rather than decreasing), redness spreading outward from the blister, warmth in the surrounding skin, or red streaks extending away from the area.
An infected blister won’t heal on its standard timeline. Instead of improving by days 3 to 5, it will get worse. Infections need treatment, and waiting them out only gives bacteria more time to spread into deeper tissue.
How to Speed Things Up
The single most effective thing you can do is remove the source of friction or irritation. Switch shoes, wear gloves, or use padding over the area. A blister that keeps getting re-irritated can last two or three times longer than one that’s left alone.
Keep the blister clean and covered with a loose bandage or blister-specific adhesive pad. Moisture-retentive bandages (like hydrocolloid patches) create an environment that supports faster skin regeneration compared to leaving a blister open to air. These are widely available at pharmacies and can cut healing time by a day or two for friction blisters.
Avoid picking at or peeling the skin as it heals. That dead skin layer, even when it looks ready to come off, is still protecting the new skin forming underneath. Let it separate naturally.
