A prepared bottle of infant formula lasts up to 2 hours at room temperature if your baby hasn’t started drinking from it. Once your baby has fed from the bottle, that window drops to 1 hour. After either limit, the remaining formula should be discarded.
The Two Time Limits That Matter
The distinction between “prepared but untouched” and “partially fed” is the most important thing to understand. When you mix powdered formula with water or open a ready-to-feed container and pour it into a bottle, the clock starts. You have up to 2 hours to either begin feeding or refrigerate it, as long as the room is at or below 77°F.
The moment your baby’s lips touch the nipple, the timeline changes. Saliva introduces bacteria into the formula, and those bacteria multiply quickly in a warm, nutrient-rich liquid. From that point, you have 1 hour to finish the feeding. Whatever is left after that hour gets thrown out, even if you put it in the fridge. Refrigeration slows bacterial growth but doesn’t stop it once saliva is in the mix.
Why Bacteria Grow So Fast in Formula
Infant formula is essentially a perfect growth medium for bacteria. It’s warm, protein-rich, and slightly sweet. One of the biggest concerns is a germ called Cronobacter, which can live in dry environments like powdered formula and then multiply rapidly once water is added. At typical room temperature (around 77°F), Cronobacter’s growth rate is moderate but meaningful. At body temperature (98.6°F), which is close to what a warm bottle reaches, the bacteria skip their slow startup phase almost entirely and begin multiplying aggressively in under an hour.
This is also why powdered formula carries slightly more risk than liquid varieties. Both ready-to-feed and liquid concentrate formulas are manufactured to be sterile. Powdered formula is not sterile and can pick up contamination after the container is opened, from kitchen surfaces, sinks, or even the water used to prepare it.
Refrigerated Formula Lasts Longer
If you like to prepare bottles in advance, refrigeration buys you significantly more time. A freshly prepared bottle that hasn’t been fed to your baby can be stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Opened containers of ready-to-feed or liquid concentrate formula last up to 48 hours in the refrigerator.
The key is getting the bottle into the fridge promptly rather than letting it sit on the counter first. If a prepared bottle has already been out at room temperature for an hour and a half, you don’t get a fresh 24-hour window by putting it in the fridge. And again, once your baby has started drinking from a bottle, refrigerating the leftovers doesn’t reset the clock. Discard it within an hour regardless.
Hot Days Shorten the Window
The 2-hour guideline assumes a room temperature at or below 77°F. On warmer days, or in a car, stroller, or diaper bag without cooling, bacteria multiply faster and the safe window shrinks. Ideally, keep your environment between 65°F and 75°F when formula is sitting out. If you’re out and about in warmer weather, an insulated bag with ice packs helps keep prepared bottles cool and closer to refrigerator conditions until you’re ready to feed.
For travel, one practical approach is to carry pre-measured powdered formula and a separate bottle of water, then mix fresh right before feeding. This avoids the timer entirely until the bottle is prepared.
How to Tell if Formula Has Gone Bad
Time limits are your most reliable safety measure, since harmful bacteria don’t always change how formula looks or smells. That said, certain signs are clear red flags. For powdered formula in the container, watch for clumping, texture changes, a sour smell, or discoloration in the powder itself. For liquid formula or a prepared bottle, look for separation, curdling, a foul or sour odor, or any change in color or consistency. Bloated or damaged packaging on ready-to-feed containers also means the formula should be discarded.
If a bottle looks and smells fine but has been sitting out longer than 2 hours (or longer than 1 hour after feeding), throw it out anyway. The bacteria that cause the most serious infections in infants don’t produce obvious warning signs at low concentrations.
Powdered vs. Liquid Formula: Different Risk Levels
Ready-to-feed and liquid concentrate formulas are manufactured to be sterile, making them the lower-risk option. The FDA considers them safer choices for higher-risk infants, including premature babies and those with weakened immune systems. Powdered formula can pick up contamination from your kitchen environment after the container is opened, so careful preparation and storage matter more with powder.
Regardless of type, the same time limits apply once the formula is prepared and poured into a bottle: 2 hours untouched, 1 hour once feeding has started. These rules are simple enough to follow consistently, which is the whole point. When you’re sleep-deprived and making bottles at 3 a.m., a clear cutoff is easier to stick with than trying to judge whether formula still “seems fine.”
