Before the procedure, you’ll check in, change into a gown, and have an IV placed for sedation. A nurse will confirm your medications and check your vitals. Your doctor may use ultrasound to locate the best spot on your liver for the needle. You may also receive a local anesthetic to numb the area. This preparation phase typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.

After the biopsy, the monitoring period is the longest part of the visit. You’ll rest quietly for 2 to 4 hours so staff can watch for signs of bleeding or other complications. During this time, nurses periodically check your blood pressure, pulse, and the biopsy site. Most people feel some soreness or dull pain in the area, which is normal.

How Different Biopsy Types Affect Timing

A transjugular biopsy uses a vein in the neck to thread a catheter down to the liver. The procedure itself takes longer than a percutaneous biopsy, and the observation period afterward extends beyond the usual 2 to 4 hours.

A laparoscopic biopsy is performed in an operating room under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes small incisions in the abdomen and uses a camera to guide the tissue collection. This approach is used when a specific area of the liver needs to be targeted or when a biopsy is combined with another surgical procedure. Because it involves general anesthesia and operating room time, the total visit is the longest of all three types.

What to Do Before You Arrive

Your doctor may ask you to stop eating and drinking for up to eight hours before the biopsy, though fasting instructions vary depending on the type of biopsy and the sedation being used. In some cases, you’ll actually be asked to eat a small snack a few hours beforehand. Follow whatever specific instructions your care team gives you, since they may differ from general guidelines.

You’ll also need to arrange a ride home. The sedation used during the procedure takes time to fully wear off, and you won’t be cleared to drive yourself.
