That two-hour recommendation surprises a lot of people, but it makes sense when you consider how your body’s own melatonin works. Taking a supplement on that same schedule mimics the natural curve more closely than popping one right as your head hits the pillow.

How Long the Sleepiness Lasts

Even though melatonin’s half-life is roughly 30 minutes, the drowsiness it causes doesn’t disappear that fast. Research shows that subjects feel noticeably sleepier for about two to four hours after taking a dose, and the overall duration of action is approximately four hours.
